you can download alleh_mobile service handbook here in English and on page 3 there list a pre paid rates which can be applied to your smartphone including the iphone, but not the iphone 4s because it hasn't been released in Korea yet.
I understand pre paid to mean that you don't need a 2 year contract.

Hey guys, I just happened to catch this thread and thought I'd put in my input.
First of all, for those who don't know me, my name is Chris, and I'm a manager in the Expat Marketing Team at kt. (Not a branch, btw, I'm at the corporate level.)
I'm also "the guy who runs the @olleh_expats twitter account" that someone so graciously mentioned earlier in the thread, and I also single handedly put together the Expat Blog and the "olleh mobile service guide".
(It's a small team, with a LOT of work to do.....)
To answer the OP's question, YES you can get an iPhone without having to sign a 2-year contract. You actually have a few different options:
1. You can pay for the full cost of the phone up front, and get the subsidy (aka discount) for the phone divided monthly, every month, for up to 3 years.
There is no "contract" for this plan, meaning that you can can terminate your service plan whenever needed. Of course it is in your benefit to use it as long as possible, because it's a kind of a "longer you use it, the more of a discount you get" kinda thing.
This is a program known as "Smart Sponsor".
2. You can sign a 1 year service contract through a program called "Shocking Sponsor Basic". As stated, this program does require the subscriber to complete a full 12 month service contract, but offers the benefit of getting a bunch of discounts upfront.
(If you qualify for an installment plan, you can also pay for the cost of the phone divided over 24 months, interest-free, with the option to complete payment anytime you like without penalty. This would be useful for situations where the full cost of an iPhone would be a bit burden some, so you can pay parts of it off at a time until you terminate your service, where you will be required to pay off whatever is left.)
For more exact pricing, I would suggest dropping by one of our kt Global Stores (Locations here: http://expatblog.kt.com/category/List%20of%20KT%20Global%20Stores).
The stores at Gwanghwamun and Gangnam are "kt Direct Stores", meaning that the stores are run by a subsidiary of ours called KT M&S, and they tend to have more accurate information. Being "Global Stores", they are at guaranteed to have at least one English speaker there. (I've worked with the English speakers at the Gwanghwamun store many times, and am very confident in their abilities.)
You can also visit a kt Plaza, which are also run by us, but they are not guaranteed to have a foreign language speaker on hand... so you may need to bring a Korean friend to help you interpret.
You can drop me a line on twitter at @olleh_expats, and I would be more than happy to help you find the closest place to you. ^^
There is also a plethora of information on our Expat Blog at http://expatblog.kt.com, and you can also download a PDF copy of our Service Guide here: http://expatblog.kt.com/notice/69
Hope that helps, have a great evening!

Chris,
Sorry to say but due to my dealings with M&S I can't say I'm a fan of how they operate.
I of course am partial to the Global store in Dongducheon, however I know that's a bit out of the way for most expats. |

What Chris says is true. However in practice, you won't walk into any of those stores and get "Shocking sponsor basic", You'll get offered Fair Price or Smart Sponsor.
With an iPhone 99% of the places won't even offer you smart sponsor anymore. It's Fair Price or nothing, this is due to the way the comapnies earn money by selling phones.
I do know everything.

So what is the final conclusion?
According to Drew10 the only contract is a 2 year contract, but now
we learn there IS a one year contract and other options.
So what is the deal ? Drew claims to know everything because he works at a KT branch yet Chris has provided actual names of service plans that we as foreigners can obtain from a KT Global Store.
If you can't make it to a global store have your local KT branch call the service center and the foreign rep can explain to them how to process the foreign contract in the system. |

What Drew said is correct, to a point.
Often times, mobile phone dealerships (especially the ones who have all three carrier logo's on their store signs) will only sell a certain product (aka type of contract, phone, etc), because they make different levels of profit depending on what they sell.
Unfortuneatly, this leads to some confusion for customers, as it sounds like kt's corporate offices say one thing, and the actual stores say another.
In case there is some confusion, here is a link defining the differences between the different kinds of stores (something that I think even many native Koreans don't know):
http://expatblog.kt.com/175
Internally the term "kt branch", would normally refer to a regional branch office of kt's corporate offices, where there are often customer service centers available, but after having talked with Drew, in this case it sounds like Drew10 works at a mobile phone dealer, rather than a kt branch.
Again, not to say that Drew10 is completely wrong, but his point of view is a bit different from official channels.
Long story short, yes, you can sign up for a 1-year contract or a no-contract plan, and if you are having trouble signing up for one at a mobile phone dealer, shoot me a message on twitter (@olleh_expats, http://twitter.com/olleh_expats )and I will help you locate a kt direct store or a kt plaza near you.
Hope that helps!

| Went to a shop in Daegu this weekend and the lady was trying to sell my co-worker an iPhone on a 1 year contract - so it does seem possible. What seems much more difficult is getting a phone that isn't a smart phone. |

Gosh, this annoys me. I don't know why they can't have these kinds of sales for everywhere in South Korea like they do for other countries, without making the effort of getting a smartphone so awkward and difficult.
I'm going to get an iPhone 4S but I'm still so clueless about what to do, price-wise.
I've spoken with a friend who works in a phone shop back at home and he said he can arrange an unlocked 4S my way as soon as my next salary comes through, if I want to take one from home, which ensures that I pay the full phone cost upfront, and the only thing left for me to do would be to get a cheap (cheap being the keyword!) contract, or perhaps even getting a prepaid Korean SIM card.
However, I am also considering the Smart Sponsor or Shocking Sponsor Basic contracts which were mentioned earlier (thank you, Chris!), but I do feel like that I need more information on both and what would be best suited for me. I don't want to spend a fortune on a phone contract or on unnecessary bills if I'm rarely using the phone for communicative purposes (I email a lot as opposed to texting or calling).
I never planned on using a phone too often over here (in the sense of making lots and lots of calls and/or text messages), but I want a smartphone for data usage and also to give myself a treat for making my way halfway across the world and starting a brand new life all by myself.
Chris, can you give me further details about price plans for the Smart Sponsor and Shocking Sponsor Basic contracts? I looked on the KT website and it didn't give much information about either, and the locations of the stores that you recommended are quite far out from where I live. I want to get an idea of an annual plan and how much would be spent in the entire year, so I can compare it with the possibility of purchasing it in full from my home country, just so I can find the most convenient option with also the most savings. |

I brought the brochure of the Smart Sponsor deal to the store when I bought it, but they told me I couldn't get it and signed me up for a Shocking Sponsor deal which was a one time 50.000 won discount. The Smart Sponsor deal seems a lot better and could be something like ~13.000 won a month discount. |

The prices of the iPhone, whether in Korea, or somewhere like the US/Canada, are all set by Apple, and are generally quite comparable. (When the phones are purchased with no-contract, no discount program, etc)
Keeping that in mind, in terms of convenience, I would say that your option of getting one from home activated here would probably the most "convenient", as there is no "contract" of any sort to be tied into.
It seems that (perhaps at the fault of telecoms) the word "contract" is mistakenly used in all cases where you get cell phone service. A "contract" only applies to cases where you buy a phone at a discounted (subsidized) price, in exchange for a promise of 2 years of continued usage. When you bring your own phone, such as one from your home country, there is no need for contract, since you are not being provided a subsidy from a carrier. (This is pretty much the case with most mobile phone service providers in the world.)
In essence, if you were to have your friend send you an iPhone 4S from home, (remember that it must be unlocked in order for it function here), you could walk into a kt store and have them activate it with your choice of pretty much any plan you want. Say, if you wanted the basic plan with no included minutes and no data (pay only for what you use), you could get away with a phone bill of 15,000 KRW per month after taxes. Since you are using an iPhone, you could add a data package onto that, or you can just go with an i-Type rate plan, where you get minutes, texts, and data packaged into one rate plan... but like I said, you can choose from almost any mix of rate plans that kt has, since there is no "contract" obligation to use a specific one.
If you decide that you want to buy the phone from kt, you will be entering into a 2 year contract, in which the discount you are provided will depend on which rate plan you use (the higher your rate plan price is, the more of a discount you receive). So if you are planning to use a higher end rate plan anyway, you may be better off by buying an iPhone from kt and then getting the discounts, but if you have more customized needs, or don't want to be hassled with a contract, then perhaps bringing your own phone may be a more convenient method for you.
Hope that helps |

I received your twitter a few weeks ago, saying that you paid for your iPhone upfront, but you say that you only received a one time 50,000 won discount? I'm not familiar with any program that only gives a one time 50,000 won discount on the purchase of an iPhone... I would suggest that you first call our customer service center to see if they can look into your account and find out exactly how you're being charged (since I can't take your personal information on this forum). You can reach them toll-free by dialing 1583 from your kt mobile phone, or by calling 02-2190-1180 from any regular landline.
I see that you also left me a message on twitter, after you get in touch with customer service, shoot me a message there and let me know what's going on. |

What is your problem? Drew10 is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cell phones and he's been providing pretty good advice on this forum for a while.
What he's says probably applies to most cell phone stores in Korea that arent directly managed by KT - not everyone can run up to a global store in Seoul whenever they need to, and if they get there there's still no guarantee. I know this from my epic adventure trying to buy a K-pad (Enspert) from KT last year, which I never ended up buying because even the global stores wouldnt give me a straight answer. They ended up having a hard time selling that pad - wonder why... |

That guy is a pretty decent troll. Trolling me in threads I never posted in, trolling my PM's..ETC.
Chris has alot of good information, and should be considered the main source of info from KT on this forum.
I can only relate my personal experiences and knowledge in working as a manager of an independent retail shop. Though I do work closely with a Global store and 2 affiliate stores listed on the KT expat blog, Chris will have the most up-to-date information. |

This is a wonderful post, and it really puts my mind at ease. I'm going to ask my friend from home to get the phone and have it sent forward instead, so I don't have to worry about any tie-ins with contracts or any inflated price plans/termination fees. I came to the country to save money and I still want to do so, so the safest option for me would be to get it from home, where I know for sure how much I'm paying for the phone, and it'd also save me having to run riot around the country and trying to find a store that sells the 4S at an upfront price.
Thanks for your help (and everyone else's!). |
