Like it, like it, like it a lot ...
But seriously, league just doesn't have enough phases or variations in strategy to interest me. It's all just give the ball to the big guy who's going to do "hard yards" "up the middle", then "spread it wide" and "break the line" ... not enough thinking involved, it's rugby with a lobotomy ... |
I like to think of it as rugby with an extra Y chromosone. Love it. Grab the ball and chaaaarrrrge!!! Brilliant. |

| i'm a Union guy at heart, but i've watched aussie league from about 13 years old when it was first televised in NZ. State of origin rocks, it should though as it's the best of the best really. It's a lot tamer now than it was in the old days which is good for the game but a bit sad as well, who could forget Geyer v Lewis. Nowdays the guys are a bit too scared to throw a punch because the judiciary will sting them, maybe they could make it like hockey where 2 guy's can go at it but if a 3rd guy comes in then he gets penalised. Then again maybe that's a dumb idea. |

Growing up in Queensland in the 80s I had the good fortune to attend many origin clashes in its true hey day. The fact that my father worked for the state government and got tickets on half way was also a huge bonus. Guys like Meninga, Lewis, Miles, Close and Sammy Backoe spilt blood and broke bone for their state and the punchups where something truely beautiful to behold. Mind you, the trans-Tasman tests were also brutal, I will never forget Wally Lewis playing on for most of the second half in Rotorua after having his arm broken by madman Brendan Tuta. Ahhh, those was the days.
AFL has nothing that comes close and will remain a sideshow as there is no platform for it outside of the club level. I am a huge union fan though, having played both codes in Australia and England. Its interesting to watch the league boys crossing over now, after years of one way traffic in the other direction. Pity Andrew Johns didnt make the switch though, he would have been dynamight.
Cheers

I'll watch the SOO, mainly because it's the highlight of the rugby league year.
Really, international games are nothing on the scale and ferocity of SOO. Besides a few exceptions, it's the cream of the players in world rugby league playing head to head.
That said, I'll take run of the mill union any day over the NRL comp, or any other rugby league based comp for that matter.
Things I don't like about league are the 40-20 rule (schoolboy union players do it week in week out. Let's see some kicks for territory's sake and see lots more attacking opportunities), and the 10m rule.
The latter is the real difference between the two codes, as in union, the defence can sit right on the advantage line, which leaves the attack two options in either sitting deep and risk losing territory, or trying to gain metres close to the breakdown and trying to maintain possession.
The best things about league is the tackle count, which sees forced turnover of possession (which helps make games close), and the variation in kicking games, especially when it comes to Andrew Johns, high in the tackle count and deep in opposition 22.
