Yeah, you'll learn that pizza was invented in Korea. |

Maybe it is 찜닭? I will look into it.
Actually any recommendations for good places in Seoul of Gwangju, I would appreciate. I had a few favourites but I'm not even sure they exist anymore, I will need to go back and check.
Even really good galbi/samgyupsal/BBQ places are harder to find in the west than you would think. Or at least, than I thought it would be. The lettuce is all wrong, for one.
As for pizza, I live in New York! Best pizza in the world.
But I'm also looking forward to Korean fried chicken, as it's also not so easy to find in the West.
Dave spends most of his working day handling orders through this form:
https://www.secure-quotes.com/eslcafe/post.asp
That is, checking credit card numbers, handling ad placement, fixing formatting, etc. Maybe editing typos.
When I was brought on board, he was literally checking credit card numbers over the telephone to make sure they were valid.
It's a massive waste of time, when this could be automated programmatically and essentially chop his 8 hour working day into less than 1. Then his time could be better spent on loafing, or even better, improving the rest of the site.
I always felt he was in a very tenuous position. The site was #1 for ESL jobs, and I think it still is, but it would be pretty easy to knock him out of that spot. I thought he should take advantage of his lead, let computers handle the easy stuff, and he could concentrate on innovation, writing, community building, etc, stuff that would be a better use of his time.
He didn't agree with me at the time, looks like he still doesn't.
Working with Dave was interesting in that even though he's done many things "wrong" with this website, it generates a lot of money for him and is a success on that level.
I still think he's in danger of losing his lead, even though he's had it for years now. Sooner or later someone is going to figure it out, and he'll have a lot more time on his hands to validate credit card numbers, because fewer of them will be coming in. |

From what I've gleamed from the site and his refusal to respond to anything from anybody, I get the sense that he is just not interested in improving the site.
Perhaps all is not lost though. After several years, he did fix the typo on his profile page from "Cheif" to "Chef." |

닭한마리 (Dalk Han Ma Ri) is a kind of like a bigger version. Whole chicken (large size) boiled from raw in broth at your table, then cut up and eaten with spicy dipping sauce. |

I was just about to mention the same thing. Its seriously amazing and delicious, and there is a place in Dongdaemun that is apparently one of the best. If there is supposedly a new chicken dish, then my guess is that it would be this. Whether it actually is 'new' though I really don't know. |

This is the place you mention. About 5mins walk from Dongdaemun, and one of my favourite eating places in Seoul. I've been there in excess of 20 times and it NEVER fails to disappoint. Can't recommend it enough.
It's very popular, so waiting outside for a table to be available is pretty usual. A little tricky to find, but absolutely worth the effort! This particular place has been knocking it out since 1978 so not really a new dish. |

I know the woeful state of kalbi in the US. Tried having it in New York and got sodded by the stupid leaves. I find that what's important isn't just the quality of the meat, but also what comes on the side. Curious about what you rate as important in a meat restaurant, I might recommend you one if it falls in line with what you dig. Same with restaurants in general.
I have yet to find a really awesome 안동찜닭 restaurant, though. I've got a lot of the other stuff sussed, but not this one. Had a decent batch at a place in Gagnam, but that's about it. And stay away from Myeong-dong. One place there took out every single bit of spiciness without asking first, and boy was I pissed. |

Ah yes, that is the place! I have been there many times too, and it is by far my favourite meal in Seoul. Also, you are right, it most definitely is not a new dish. I completely forgot about the fact that it was an old and established restaurant! Still, its by far the most delicious thing ever, and I make it a habit to go there at least once a month. ^^ |

I think it might be "buldak"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buldak
which became popular in 2000. Zyzyfer suggested it on the first page, but I got confused with "bulnak" the bulgogi-nakji dish.
But thanks for that 닭한마리 recommendation, i will check it out. It sounds great.
Zyzyfer I couldn't agree with you more about the meat restaurant (or "Korean BBQ" as they call it here in NYC). What comes on the side is just as important as the meat.
The best kalbi place I ever went to was on the outskirts of Kwangju, and they had 8 different kinds of homegrown lettuce, not to mention the yangpa mix, and homemade ssamjang. For 8,000 won a serving as I remember.
All things considered, the meat has to be good, but the side dishes and stuff that come with it have to be good as well.
Passable here in Manhattan is "Miss Korea." Flushing has better places, like "Jang Tuh Sutbulgui." But you are going to have to spend more like $30 a serving to get anywhere.
And as far as Dave not wanting to improve the site, make no mistake, he has a deep affection for it. He could have sold out for millions of dollars, but he didn't.
He wants to improve it, but he doesn't want to make it so complicated that he can't understand it himself. Which is why it's kind of locked into Web 0.5 mode.
I took a closer look this afternoon: traffic has been dropping over the last few years. Which is not good. |

that is surprising since there are more teachers in Korea and people interested in it now than ever. |

Yeah I got nuthin'. I tend to prefer places that have sour side dishes and onion marinades. Perilla leaves are always a plus. And the kimchi should fry up and not taste fishy. I think you roll a bit higher. |

Denizens of Dave's:
The time has come for me to return to the scene of my past crimes, South Korea. It's been more than 10 years. When I left, "Gwangju" was spelled with a "K," as my moniker can attest.
It was a different time.
This board was ruled by a man called The Lemon, and posting here was serious business. Dave Sperling himself hired me to help him fix this very site, and to Photoshop a photo of him wearing a beret, so his arms didn't look too big.
Hard to believe! But I am coming on vacation, for relaxation.
And food.
It's actually very hard to find good food recommendations online for Korea, especially ones with maps or that I would have a chance of finding.
I've been eating Korean food all this time, but I realize that in my absence new dishes have been invented, and new areas have become hot for certain dishes.
If anyone could recommend me some good restaurants for Korean food (no fusion) in Seoul and "Gwangju" (that G is just so weird) I would appreciate it. |
Taking a shot here but have you tried (most likely you have) ori bulgogi (bbq duck)?
There is an OUTSTANDING beef bbq place just outside of Gyungju (previously known as Kyungju). If you want exact directions let me know!
Oh and lets not discuss the state of Kalbi/Galbi back here in Canada, nor its price! |
