One of my old coworkers liked to bring this giant, *beep* off hypodermic needle into her kindy classes. She wouldn't say anything, just pull it out and wait quietly until the kids noticed. Man, those were some well behaved kids. |

Yeah, lets get back on topic.
Hypodermic needle, nice idea.
Can anyone suggest other good weapons apart from sticks? |

I have a drum stick in one of my classes which is very ironic because i play the drums.
Get one of those long pencils. Can be used for writing and hitting (dont take me seriously there. You Know who you are).
Empty or no empty 1.6 litre pitchers of Hite or OB. Gave my flatmate a black eye with one of those. |

| I'm contractually prohibited from physically disciplining my students. I wouldn't anyway, but I'm curious how that clause came to be included. |

| I occasionally have one. Mostly to make a lot of noise and scare the hell out of any kid who dares sleep in my class. |

yeah I have through years of training mastered the art of hitting the desk with my hand. The sound that those cheap light hogwon desks make when you give them a good slap is impressive, I will give fair postural warning that I'm about to do this and most of the kids are smart enough to a) cover their ears and b) get their heads up off the desk. Those that don't obviously weren't paying any attention to me and the look of shock on their little faces is priceless, that and the jolt of adreneline brings them back to the present like nobodies business. For acts of random violence I doubt anyone can top Madame Coulton my school French teacher who used to throw anything that came to hand usually a board rubber (however this was one of those wood backed chalk board rubbers none of this plastic whiteboard rubbish) she however threw chairs and on one legendary occasion a table (she was indeed a strong woman). Bottom line you didn't snooze in her class and when she said jump you asked how high............... Whilst I'd love every student to want to be there (or at least ignore me in a non disruptive fashion) I have to look out for the best interests of those students who do want to learn and if that means slamming tables to get some quiet so be it. On a related note my kindergarten kids were playing teacher and they thought it was great fun to hit ech other when one of them got a question wrong this worried me intently and I tried to explain to them this was not OK but to no avail *shakes head* |

| For those of you who carry a stick but don't want to hit a student with it, what do you do if students tries something bad and tries to goad you into using the stick. |

I fully carry my stick with authority. The Head of my department, who is quite a character, wrote "RULE OF ******" on one side and "SPARE THE ROD, SPOIL THE CHILD" on the other.
Its a wicked way to bring students attention to you. AND it serves as a useful pointer, and prodded. If a student sleeps, I poke with my stick. Not hard, no harder than I would with my hand, but enough to wake him up. Once he sees that its the stick prodding him, he is usually wide awake.
My kids seem to realize that I dont want to use my stick, but are too afraid to push it beyond that. Which is good, cuz ya never know... |

I have a stick.
The best ones I found are the ones you buy at the temples that have a hollow bit down the middle that make a HUGE noise.
Never hit a kid with one though. It would leave some major damage. |

Had an Aggie* teacher in high school who used a sledgehammer to wake up his students. He'd see someone sleeping out of the corner of his eye, slowly pick up the sledgehammer, tip-toe over to the student's desk [he'd only do it to guys], and take a full swing right down on the desktop. BAM! The goddamn windows would rattle. Needless to say, it rarely happened twice during the same class.

I sometimes have one, and I don't really even carry it ina menacig way. I just stroll around the classroom, twirling it like a baton and that seems to do the trick. |

Why not a straight NO, in the poll. I would never consider using a stick in the classroom. Each to their own. |

My boys get "ballerina arms" for ten minutes... where they have to keep their arms above their head... if there are 6 then the whole class must do it for 10 seconds while maintaining silence or it goes back to 10... good way of calming situations down as it requires them to be quiet and for you to take a breather... of course this punishment has to be eased into. The students must have something to look forward to first (like a game, end of period etc.) then after a few times you can use it in the middle of the lesson. |

Yep, I have a weapon complete with wrist strap so the students can't steal it from me. Makes a very loud noise when rapped on the desk. It appropriately has "Weapon of Mass Instruction" written down the side.
As for wrapping electrical tape on it to stop bruises, I prefer to hit the students on the head. Their hair makes the bruises harder to see. |
