A Moment to Remember is good if you like romantic clichs.
When I Turned Nine is a nice movie about growing up in Korea in the... 70ties? |

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (봄 여름 가을 겨울 그리고 봄).
First Korean movie I've watched, and still the best.
edit: while looking up the Korean title I found out that this movie made Roger Ebert's Great Movie List. |

Chingu gets a mention from me.
Oldboy as well.
Chaser was a solid movie.
Tell me something was pretty good too (older flick however)
Crying Fist was interesting but maybe not a great movie.
Jiburo (coming home) was a solid movie
Check out mysoju.com, you have tons of choices you can stream. |

| My Sassy Girl (Korean name: 엽기적인 그녀) is a faaairly decent and extremely popular rom-com if that's your thing, the first hour or so has a few good laughs in it. Though personally I found the guy to be a spineless doormat and the girl to be a detestable sociopath, so it was difficult to root for their relationship. |

If you're into Buddhist movies, Korea has a bunch of them.
"Little Monk" aka "동승" -- remake of an earlier black-and-white Korean flick "Hometown of My Heart"
"Hi Dharma" and the sequel "Dharma Goes to Seoul" -- comedies
"Why Has Bodhi-dharma Left for the East?" -- perhaps one of the finest Buddhist films made
"Aje Aje Bara Aje" aka "Come, Come Upward" -- a movie about a Buddhist nun who enters the secular world
All the above films are also on DVD, though "Bodhi-dharma" is available in the U.S. |

a pretty good movie about gangs, greed, etc is called City of Violence (짝패) i LOVE this movie. kinda reminds me of Chingu, but i didnt like how chingu was done overall. This one has more in the lines of greed and has pretty good fights in it too mixed in with some humor. Not to mention the very end is awesome. (fingers literally go flying! lol)

Two Lee Yoon Ki movies
This Charming Girl is one of the greatest Korean movies out there. Not everyone's cup of tea, but every time you watch it you get something new or think in a different level. It's a character study and superbly acted.
My Dear Enemy hard to believe that its the same director as the This Charming Girl, but its just as good. Jun Do-Hyun (probably Korea's greatest actress) is in this comedy-drama.
Another Jun Do-Hyun movie- Secret Sunshine. Very well acted, tough movie to watch though.
Feathers in the Wind- Such a simple movie but so well done. A man goes to an island where his former love has promised to meet him. Off beat, low key, and quiet.
Others- Paju; The Good, the Bad, and the Weird; Singles; Someone Special; Between Love and Hate; Sorum; Princess Aurora; The Big Scene; I Wish I Had a Wife; The Harmonium in my Memory; etc. etc.
If you stick to the big directors- Kwak Jae Yong, Hong Sang Soo, Im Sang Soo, Kim Ki Duk, Na Hong Jin, Lee Yoon Ki, and Park Chan Wook
That and a few actors a safe bets- the aforementioned Sung Kang Ho and Cha Seung Won. Jeon Do-Hyeon, Jang Jin Young, and Son Ye-Jin for actresses. |

The Taegukgi one...I forget the full name, but it was a very moving film. A war movie, it opens with an old man finding his brothers remains, and flashes back to their time together during the Korean War. If you dont well up a bit when the man calls 형!형! then you might be heartless.
For an amazing insight into Korean Buddhism, "Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left For the East" is recommended. This movie effortlessly weaves the major tenets of Mahayana Buddhism into the plot, and still manages to tell the story of three Korean men in a remote hermitage. What some might call plodding, I say is attention to detail and an entirely unHollywood flick that is immensely watchable. Just dont take a date. Buddhist pacing.
Edit: Oh, and 낮술! Daytime booze...it was filmed in Gangwondo and is a small-budget weird film about a young Seoulites adventures in my neck of the woods. Love the part where the store-owner warns the man from taking the north road as there be tigers there. |
