Those loss numbers are misleading.

Once they start charging those people, ridership among that demographic will drop SHARPLY. I'm sure some beady eyed Korean is sitting there looking at the numbers and thinking if they charged seniors money, the - just becomes a +.

Kinda like saying:

If I charge 10 people $1 for a soda, then I make $10.
If I raise the price to $2 then I'll make $20!

Its more like: If I raise the price to $2, I'll make $0 because the 10 people will jsut go someplace else.

Yeah, which other subway system are they going to use? Wink

1. They can drive. People ages 65-75 are more than capable of driving a motor vehicle.

2. they can take the bus.

3. Their adult children can drive them around.

4. They can use a taxi.

5. They can pay to use the subway like everyone else.

Wiki stuff

300K passengers riding for free is hardly breaking the system.

If you measure the price of a subway ticket along with other prices in Korea these days then you have to say the subway ticket is too cheap.

900won!

That's about the price of an apple.

Even if it was increased to 1500won it would mean you could still get from one side of Seoul to the other, and back again, for the price of a small bag of mandarin oranges!!

It's too cheap.......that's why they're losing money.

Although if it is being run at a loss with state support for reasons like allowing low-income people to get around then I would wholeheartedly support that.

The train (paid) is cheaper than all those other things.
