I haven't been to very many major airports, and I've only been to the international terminal of O'Hare, but I hated it. The terminal is completely isolated from the rest of the airport and it takes forever to get there. And once you go through security, there are no places to eat or buy anything. I was starving waiting for my flight.

It takes forever to get anywhere in O'Hare, but it is better than the one airport that is busier: Hartsfield-Jackson in ATL. Definitely not a fan of either...

I cannot believe that they would put Charles DeGaulle in Paris as #1 worse. We cleared customs in 30 seconds!! It's a great airport! Manilla Airport really sucked! At the Melbourne Airport they took away all of our food ~including my wife's kimchi! ~She was't very happy about that!! The Immigration official asked me if I had a criminal record. I replied~why? Do you still need one to get in?!! Laughing Laughing

Except building a nice, effective airport can be a good move. Just look at ICN, Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Hong Kong, and KL. BKK is a debatable since it was already a transportation hub before the new airport, and I am not sure if it has been much of a boon for either Bangkok or Thailand.

Given how many resources the US has, its airports (for the most part) are pretty sad.

I think perhaps if more U.S. airports charged a passenger service fee, they might have the money to renovate and such.

Heathrow is horrible and interacting with the staff there can be a nightmare. Power-tripping cretins who think a uniform and badge is an excuse to exercise their barely concealed prejudices on foreigners, or the "not my job, mate" useless, pass the buck idiots who just can't be bothered. Kind of sets the tone for the whole of the country, I suppose.

Most of the people who work in Heathrow are foreigners anyway, so who are they prejudicing against?!
I use Heathrow quite a lot and I find, especially in T5, that it is not as bad as people like to make out.

It's interesting, I haven't heard one word about Soekarno-Hatta just outside of Jakarta. I mean that has got to be the worst I have ever seen for MANY reasons.

A lot like Manila, I take it?

Speaking of which: the thing that pissed me off the most about Aquino wasn't the overall crappiness of the place, but the fact that there is no ATM outside of security, which means you have to think ahead and grab cash for a cab prior to exiting.

I've been to 3 on that list and I can vouch for Ninoy Aquino being crappy.

I also don't like Guangzhou Baiyun International.

Agreed!

I hate flying through Chicago.

Toronto (Pearson) used to suck not its an ok airport.

As for the list...

LAX is horrible.

JFK is hit and miss.

DeGaulle is fine if you do not have to catch a connecting flight. If you do..it sucks.

By far the best airports I've used have been in NE Asia, ICN, Beijing, Tokyo, Pudong, Osaka... Portland, Oregon is nice too, Huston pretty good.

My favorite is that little one on Ko Samui. Probably because it means I'm spending some time in Koh Samui.

Gatwick and Heathrow are both embarrassing eyesores that look like they should be in some economically and socially depressed eastern European country, not a world class Capital city. Honestly, the prices for drinks and snacks too, ouch! It really is a shame as a bad experience for an hour in a place like that can kind of ruin a traveller's impression fo the country and almost in some cases, set the tone for the rest of their trip. Like they get so bent out of shape with the atmosphere, prices and service at the airport that they go into their trip angry and frustrated and their first impression being 'this place sucks' and that can linger. As for it setting the tone for service and attitude for the rest of the country though - nonsense. Well I guess if you didn't know how to avoid the tourist traps - yeah it kind of could...

Any airport without a casino should be demolished. DEMOLISHED.

Any airport that is on par with the way Don Mueng Bangkok used to be is acceptable. Why the hell did Bangkok build a new airport anyway?

Ive only been at OHare once for literally 1 minute as my arrival gate and departure gate happened to be right next to each other. The departing flight was all boarded, they were just waiting for me. Whats impressive is that my luggage could make it too. Big respect to the ground staff of OHare.

Manila wasnt bad at all but Ive only been to the newest terminal (3 I believe) so I cant really speak for the others.

The one I disliked the most so far is Doha. The airline (Qatar) is top notch but the airport is way too small. Manila is categories above for example and have an overall "developing country" feel. They need to improve that situation desperately because the airline has outgrown that terminal building years ago.

I wouldn't necessarily pick exactly the same ones, but I'd definitely agree that East Asian airports (and for that matter East Asian airlines ) have mostly been amongst the best I've used.

Generally, I do think ICN is deservedly highly rated. However, I wonder if it'd do quite so well if people judging it only ever took late evening departures. A couple of times over the last few years, I've flown after 9pm from the new foreign airline terminal and was very unimpressed with either the limited selection of dining and shopping options there, or with the tiny proportion of what shops that did exist that were still open.

In fact, when taking a midnight Emirates flight last year I decided for that reason to get something to eat in the main terminal building before boarding the shuttle train out to the annexe terminal, and was surprised that around 9pm even in the main terminal, most shops and restaurants were already closed. I think there were only 2 restaurant options open and the one I chose only had a special late night (8pm - 9pm Shocked ) menu of not very much at all.

As someone from the north of England, I would always try to avoid flying to either LHR or LGW and my experiences of either only add to my wish to enter/leave the UK via somewhere else.

That said, in fairness, I don't think either is as bad as a few years ago. As someone else mentioned, the new T5 at Heathrow is as good as you'd expect for something so new. Some other Heathrow terminals have also made significant improvements over the last couple of years, and Gatwick too has recently completed a massive refurbishment.

Also, both Heathrow and Gatwick are largely victims of their own success over a 50+year period and their geographical limitations regarding expansion. There's already a scary amount of air traffic in South East England (London actually has 5 airports) and there simply isn't much more room for manoeuvre.
