| Let me just add one thing. There are two realities. There is the over 45ish Korean in the big and regional cities and the over 35ish in the countryside. They will have a very outdated more primitive way of thinking. Under these age groups will for the most part be closer to our western way of thinking. Sadly most bosses in Korea belong to the former rather than the latter. Why some of them can be real jerks. (I'm older than you, I can be an arrogant jerk. You're not Korean, so you don't matter. Bla bla.) Fortunately, the culture is slowly changing. Better yet, stick to the cities. Ha ha. |

| This is why I can understand my students well, but some of my former Korean bosses are a strange anomoly to me. At least two I'd like to have punched out but didn't because I wanted to keep working here. |

people tell me I'm Turkish, I tried to explain to them I'm British, but they have decided I'm Turkish, so I let them think what they want.
Never had a problem... but then again I don't really look Turkish. |

Yes....
...likely also in Africa if you don't look...well....AFRICAN! (Of course, depending on the country)
...racism is normal. It comes in two forms: positive and negative. I get most of the latter on a daily basis. You can't let it dictate your life or livelihood. Sometimes you have to ignore it, other times you have to sock it right in the mouth.
The one thing you'll learn in Korea (if you haven't yet) is when to choose your fights and when to let things pass. But if you plan to pussyfoot things around and make your life a question of "are people being discriminatory toward me," then I'd recommend staying exactly where you are, i.e. outside of Korea. |

Its not a new phenomenon really. Korean ladies like a man that can lead the way and is also entertaining. Looks are usually pretty low on their list of desirable atributes. I'd say social ability ranks highestfor them.
I'd even get told in the early 2000's that they didn't want to date me sometimes because I was too handsome and would be a 'playboy.' I actually find the ones in their early 20's now to be a lot more shallow and caught up on looks. |

i was just concerned if due to my difference from the typical lighter complexion Caucasian, if i would be in any way treated differently in terms of:
1. i will be disliked by parents of students i would teach
2. social life (k-friends, k-girlfriends)
i guess im not to concerned about getting dirty looks or being talked back to, unless it affects 1 or 2 |

Koreans more than likely won't be able to tell the difference. My Saudi buddy is viewed as "Canadian" (i.e. white) when he says he's from Canada, and is viewed as an Arab when he says he's from Saudi. If you look whitish and are from an English speaking country, Koreans will typically perceive you as Caucasian, as they can't really tell the difference. |

Dude, when it comes to K chicks, an Egyptian friend of a friend of a friend twice removed gets more tail than most guys I've met in Korea. He does lie and say he's a US citizen though, when he's not. Not sure if that makes a difference... Plus he's tall.
If you're foriegn and tall in Korea you can look like the Elephant man and have an iq of 100 and still do well with the ladies. They do love them some tallness. |

Well, times are changing. But I use to hear a lot from others who were here in the past. Even some older Korean women I met admitted this that bald guys, fat guys, black guys, darker arab guys, etc were off the radar. Some K women admitted this themselves. Many Korean guys have also said that Korean women really hate baldness. But, as I've said, something is changing here over the past couple of years.
Yes, they are more obsessed with tallness compared to anything I've ever heard from most Western women. But Seoul women do seem friendly enough with many willing to come and talk to me. I'm average height so I guess it's never been a problem for me. But this new openess from K chicks seems a relatively new phenominon. A few years ago, even there (in Seoul), many women didn't want to be seen talking to a non Korean.
Sure some women would talk to you at certain nightclubs and in Itaewon, but mostly would not be caught dead talking to you in public during daylight hours. But it seems like now it's no problem in Seoul area. Rest of the country can still have racist pockets. |
