Comedies
Attack the Gas Station
Dasepo Naughty Girls- Absolutely bizarre movie, but it had its moments. Not great, but worth the time.
Crush and Blush- What an anti-hero, and the geat Bang Eun Jin.
The Harmonium in my Memory- Jeon Do Hyun, Lee Byung Hun
Singles- Great movie at capturing late 20s-30s single angst
My Dear Enemy

Drama
Sorum
Feathers in the Wind-Great Art House movie. Very sweet and charming. Also one of the shortest Korean movies out there.
This Charming Girl- Amazing movie by Lee Yoon-ki, best director IMHO. Great art house movie.
Secret Sunshine- Great performance by Jeon Do Hyeon.
My Dear Enemy- Probably my favorite easy to watch Korean movie. Comedy-Drama. Guy owes the ex 3000 bucks. Ex shows up to collect and the guy spends the day driving with her to collect it from various sources (all women).
Once Upon a Time in High School
The Classic

Thriller
The President's Last Bang- Black Comedy Suspense movie about Park Chung Hee's assassination.
The Big Scene- Loses steam at the end but the beginning is brilliant. Great first shot.
Princess Aurora- Bang Eun Jin's thriller is extremely well done. Only 2 great scenes, but no bad ones.

The Chaser (추격자) is a good movie.

Chingu (친구) is a good movie.

Ski Jump (국가대표) is a funny up lifting type of movie. (based on actual events)

Lifting King Kong (킹콩을 들다) Another up lifting type of movie based on a true story.

Children (아이들) Is pretty good. It's also based on a real event but the ending is fictional.

The ones That I liked the most were

웰컴 투 동막골 Welcome to Dongmakgol

쉬리 - Shiri

방가 방가 - Banga banga

There are some more that I have seen and liked but just cant think of their name. I have to say though that although I liked both Taeguki and Shilmido the last 15/20 minutes of both movies were awful and undermined what a great movie either could have been.

I'll list a few, though I kind of stopped reading lists. Embarassed

First half of Sex Is Zero (색즉시공) - great, raunchy adolescent humor in the first half, second half does a complete 180 and really hurts the movie
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring (봄 여름 가을 겨울 그리고 봄) - purely for the aesthetics, the story is way too frivolous (not a big fan of Kim Kideok)
Oasis (오아시스) - So good!
The Housemaid (하녀) - It's a little meandering (didn't help I was watching without subtitles) but I thought it held up well considering, and the last scene... Shocked And as another poster mentioned, some very hot bits!
My Wife Is a Gangster (조폭 마누라) - The sequels were terrible but the first is quite good.
Volcano High (화산고) - really fun if you like anime/manga stuff, also features a ton of big-name actors. I think maybe two people in the cast aren't extremely familiar faces lol

My personal favorite is Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (복수는 나의곳), it's already mentioned but that movie is seven shades of awesome.

The Warrior (무사) had so much potential. I mean, you've got a great cast of both Chinese and Korean actors (the bad guy was way way WAY better in this than the Karate Kid remake), and a totally cool plot for an action-adventure movie. It's bloody, the hero kills first and doesn't bother asking questions, the weapons and armor look cool. But then they go and make the ending the sappiest thing. Throw in abominable English subtitles (and I got my copy in the US!) and it zaps it just enough to make me only recommend it to fans of ancient Asian warfare. As in, if you like Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Water Margin or Korean period dramas, you'll get a kick out of it.

I wish I could think of others, I've seen some stinkers but occasionally a gem emerges. Of the last two I've seen, Moss(?) (이끼) was pointless - why did the kid get suspicious in the first place? - and the other one, whose title escapes me, is sufficiently bloody and will satiate the ajosshi hater in you, but that doesn't come until near the end and it's a rough movie to sit through. Plus the ending is just bizarre.

I totally overlooked Banga Banga! Yeah, that was actually a great movie. Shiri was highly praised for its time and wasn't too bad, either. Welcome to Dongmakgol I remember being cute more than anything else for some reason, probably just faulty memory.

That stinker ending seems to be a syndrome in a lot of Korean flicks, they build up so well and just fizzle out, or go inexplicably bizarre, or get insanely sappy.

To be honest I think one of the reasons why I liked it as much as I did was because I had just seen a string of bad movies and it was better that I had expected.

Yeah exactly. I wonder why this occurs so much?

Does anyone know the name of the movie where a detective finds a body by a lake and it is cut into pieces? He has an apprentice girl (believe she was an apprentice) and she helps him solve the case.

A coworker borrowed it a long time ago and took off with it so I don't remember the name. I do remember it being really good and a major twist at the end that defined the perfect revenge from years of planning.

Cheers! Yeah the ending was shocking. Don't think I can watch it again though. I know what happens and what's a thriller without the thrilling ending? I recommend it though to others that liked Old Boy.

A comedy "drama" gangster movie I really enjoyed was "My Boss, My Hero" the sequel "My Boss, My Student" was funny too. I liked how it played on Confucianism and respect for the elders/bosses.

O Bal Tan
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053577/

Tazza
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0875025/

The Housemaid (1960)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150980/
Way better than the 2010 version. Acting + story to start. Both endings were weird, but 1960 was more entertaining by far.

Didn't like Sunny. Had one of those cheesy "lets cheer up the audience with BS" type of endings.

Another +1 for Ddongpari. I really liked it. I really wanted to like the main character/anti-hero.
