Appears to be a little crosstalk potentially hurting the SEA guy, but it's obvious that race is the dominant factor in this situation. Really a shame.

To elaborate on the crosstalk: the method the SEA guy is using to get to his goal might be clashing with what passerbys might expect from the interaction. The SEA guy is using more formal and polite language ("Excuse me sir, could you please help me find some information?") compared to the white guy ("Uh hi, can you tell me where Coex is?"). This may be because he felt he should be really humble and courteous to strangers that he's asking for help. But he was also less direct, which may have been a small factor in getting blown off by everyone. There's little perceived commitment to the interaction if all you have to do is give a quick set of directions, but "information" is quite vague.

PSA: Yes, stuff like this happens in America too. We know. You don't need to tell us.

This was my view as well. The white guy was a lot more direct, which is particularly important when dealing with Koreans who don't speak English particularly well. Race definitely played into it, but walking up to people in Seoul and asking them to help you isn't going to get you as far as walking up to people in Seoul and forcing them to help you.

Koreans are smart. They know that a Southeast Asian on street that stops you is usually trying forcefully sell you something. I have experienced this my own travels many many times. I feel sorry for the guy but until many cultures in Southeast Asian stop harassing people on the street this perception is not going to change. Sorry to say but I would have ignored him too.

He's trying to sell them a tourist backpack and a map?

Haha, exactly. I've loving the excuses so far:

1) The white guy is hot Laughing Laughing Laughing

2) Koreans *don't* like it if you're formal and indirect

3) He's totally trying to sell them something with a map asking for directions

Keep them coming!

I just find it amusing when people begin scrambling to find unlikely reasons for something like this to happen -- anything but the obvious reason of course.

I hope nobody here is deluded enough to think that white foreigners and all other foreigners are on equal footing in Korea.

Lol what. How many southeast Asians in Korea stop you in the street to sell you something. I have encountered zero. But I've had lots of Koreans (sometimes even whites) from cults and churches trying to convert me on the street. Maybe I should ignore every Korean and white person trying to get directions in case they may be trying to convert me.

In Seoul (Itaewon) , and in Hong Kong I was pratically chased down and cornerd on the street by SEA's to buy a tailor made suit.

Strange, I always thought these guys were South Asians (even in SE Asia the tailor businesses are mainly run by S-Asians).

I know! I'm worried something strange is going to happen now, like the whole internet explodes or something....

Seriously, I'd like to see the same experiment done with two white guys, one with a more outgoing and assertive manner like the first guy and one more meek like the 2nd guy.

I'm not kidding, watch the vid again and turn the volume off, you'll see a guy with good body posture and assertive behaviour and how other people react to that versus a smaller guy with passive behaviour and posture.

I'd also like to see it done with a white guy acting more passively and an Asian guy acting more assertviely.

Anyone thinking these things don't have a massive impact in a city of people in a rush (or actually any day to day interaction) are frankly simpletons (and probably have a hard time macking on chicks too.)

I have white friends who have tried to be all meek and polite 'oooh excuse me sir' get the same brush off whereas later they thought I was rude for being assertive. Who got the job done? Me, that's who.

I still assert that a lot of the success the 1st foriegner in the vid had was due to his body language and approach. Some of it might have been due to his race, but the experiment was poorly set up and not enough control factors were taken into account and anyone unable to see that deserves to have their degree rescinded imho.

I agree that race is definitely a factor here... however, as Floating World said, this experiment was too loose. We need to see if the people would be more helpful if the South East Asian man were assertive, or if the white man were timid. I think forcing them into helping you is a big factor. My uncle did what the white guy did basically. He simply asked the people for directions. We got the same sort of assist the white guy did.

This experiment could have been done well and likely would have had some of the same results, but in its current incarnation is fairly useless.

Do it again using a short, overweight, old white dude. See how many cute girls stop to lead him to the subway station.

guys, i think you are overreacting, race isnt a factor here.

look at the 30 second point and beyond, even the koreans themselves state that race does not play a factor and that they see everyone as equal.

i think you are just being a bit too cynical on the Koreans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you currently looking for your first job here? Maybe you should visit the country before engaging in such speculation.

That's what I was thinking. Just love how people like to find outlandish reasoning for people's behavior.

However, to make the experiment more realistic, both guys should be the same build, similar clothes and have a similar accent. And say the exact same thing when initially wanting to ask for directions. None of this "can you speak english?" stuff.

Next time do the experiment with two people born in the same country, one white, and one of SE Asian descent, with the same build and similar clothing on. Same question when first interacting with the passersby. However, I still do think the non-white guy will get the brushoff.

I agree that the experiment would have been more scientific if the two subjects were of equal attractiveness.
In addition to race being a factor, people would also stop less to help a lost foreigner if they happened to be ugly or fat.

If it wasn't sensational, the producers would've never put this on the air.
