Electric blankets are good for when you sleeping, but when you wake up, get out of bed, and step on the cold, concrete floor you are gonna wish you used the ondol instead.

You have a cold, concrete floor?

And somehow you have an ondol underneath that manages to heat it up?

Huh?

Winter here, and I am cold. How much will running my ondol cost me? I'm in a 10 pyeong apartment. Would it be more cost efficient to just get an electric blanket? About how much will that raise my electricity bill? Thanks!

Last winter I would turn my ondol on from 5 pm to 11pm. My apartment never got over 18 degrees but my gas bill hit 130000 won! It's 6-7000 in the summer.

This year I bought a little box fan heater for 30k won from the local DC Mart and I run that full blast. My apartment gets up to 23 degrees now. My electric bill? 26,000 won (usually 11-12000).

That's my experience. I think ondols are absolutely worthless and cost an absurd amount of money (and I've used them in 3 different apartments, all expensive with my current apartment the most expensive).

In one month I've saved 100000 won in utilities and I'll save that for another 2-3 months. Definitely worth it in my opinion.

Ondol needs to be run constantly to really work. Otherwise every time you turn it on from cold, the first 5 hrs are spent just getting the floors warm again.

Its best to leave it on, but turn it down when you go out now that is getting really cold.

I normally have it on at about 18-20 when i'm in and turn it down to 12 when I go out, this keeps the floor warm, but not wasting too much energy.

I say we email 'Mythbusters' to sort this out!

I'm guessing it uses quite a bit more energy to heat a cold floor from scratch, but that depends on how thick the scree is that covers the pipes I suppose....

Those electric fans are far too dangerous for me to use, I belive that they are illegal in the EU......?

As for electric blankets they cause cancer if used too much (in swinewho's opinion)............. and they might be a problem if you're a bed wetter!

I'm not btw (well not for a while anyway) Smile

If you're in an old building, ondol might not work well and be really expensive due to lack of insulation in the building. But no heat ever being turned on in one of these equals mold. A newer more energy efficienct insulated building might have a reasonable heating bill, maybe 70,000 won gas bill on average each month in winter. Older building can be 130,000 and beyond. Some people have had 300,000 or more per month. Officetels can be a nightmare for utilities, too. But if you're going solely for never turning on the heat, prepare for mold, especially where dampness from the outside seeps through. (Your carbon dioxide, mixes with moisture and dampness, and then sticks to the wallpaper. Viola! Instant mold!) Heat your building if you can and constantly wipe your windows if they are thin and covered with moisture. Wipe once in the morning and again at evening or night. Good luck whatever you decide.

I put my heating on overnight nowadays. Actually it's on most of the time I'm in the flat now. The electric blanket sounds great but it's the getting out of bed in the mornings that makes me leave the heating on overnight. I don't like going to bed and dreading getting up the next day
