33, on contract #1 [of 2 planned]. Wasn't really intending to do this or be here at this stage of my life, but the major economic and political forces at work in the last few years have shown me just how little control I actually have over most of the really important choices available to me at any given time.
But I am NOT giving up on my real profession. It's still around, if anything there is more need of it now than ever, and I am damn good at it too.
I certainly can feel the poke of being too old and out of the loop compared to what I should be doing now, of 'I'm not one of those people! I'm not a lifer!' Every few weeks I feel that deep fear of wondering if there's any way I can get back to the professional world I once knew. Almost every day I swear to myself I will not be sucked into this so-called career, scavenging for Uni jobs 10 years in and feeling smug about my superior knowledge of all the BS we put up with to work here doing this.
This work is mediocre at best. This country is sub-mediocre at best. Acknowledge it, do what you must, and emulate forumer Draz. She's got her money, she's got the self-awareness earned from a stint here, and she's smart enough to get the hell out, now, instead of justifying and rationlizing staying ever longer. That's exactly my plan. |

At my first hakwan job, a lady started who was in her late 50's.
Her kids were adults, she had retired but didn't want to just sit around.
She said she wanted to try something new and different while she still could, and she'd never been to Korea. She had a great attitude, and worked much harder and was far more responsible than many of the "20 somethings."
I say-More power to her |
