Taking precaution doesn't mean the crime rate isn't low.
There is a reason Koreans feel safe just leaving stuff lying around. because that kind of crime isn't as common here. It happens, but with such a low frequency people don't care. Back home, people don't let anything out of their sight. |

If you speak korean, they'll chastise you the same way americans do about leaving stuff unlocked, complain about rapists or muggers, and phones stolen, etc.
And yes, bars on windows = crime is happening. Those things aren't cheap nor pretty.
I think the biggest difference is Korea doesn't have Junkies or gang bangers around. So less random violent crime or people who make a lifestyle out of it. Still alot of regular thieves. Many more starving folks out on the street here. |

korea has plenty of crime, it's just not youth gangs, drug dealers, hooligans, skin heads, gangs, etc walking around the streets,
but there is plenty of the crime here, the prisons are full here with criminals and there are plenty walking around.
in a country with 50 million humans running around. there is plenty of crime
1500murders last year reported, how many did you hear about? |

low crime rate != no crime rate.
How many times do you see someone just leave their laptop on a table in a coffee shop and go off to the bathroom even though they don't have anyone with them? I frequently see it. They do it because they don't expect someone to walk off with it, because it's much less common here than other places. I would never set anything down and walk away from it back home.
Yet Koreans frequently do that here. You can see them leave their jacket, purses, etc at tables and go off to order food well out of eye-sight.
Those bars are actually not that expensive when weighed against a burglary or other serious crime.

What you'll find is that Korea is high on a couple crimes like Embezzlement, Fraud and Manslaugther, but low on other crimes, like burglary and drug offences. I find the man slaughter graph weird, because the US is missing from that list for some reason..as is a great deal of africa and the middle east. |

| I think that info on Software piracy rate might be a bit off too. I wont say that Korea is the highest I have ever seen, but no way is it 80th either. |
