Half of our mandate, at any level, for those of us who flap our lips for a living, is to impart confidence. The kids already have a bagful of grammar and vocabulary. Our mission, should we choose to accept it, is to activate that bag, if you will, make it come alive, make it real. Once they open their mouths in the presence of a Native speaker, they tend to discover that they can really use the language. If you get to be here long enough to see that, it's quite a beautiful thing.

When complaining about the English teachers who can't speak English, don't forget the native-speaking teachers who live in Korea and either through sheer laziness or arrogance haven't bothered to learn the language of the country they are in.

I agree with this however their vocation isn't teaching Korean.

If somebody was teaching me child any language I would expect they would have a good all-round grasp of the language(which unfortunantly a lot of Korean-english eachers don't).

Good point. I use at lot of jokes to get my boys speaking english. I was so proud the day one of my 3rd years said 'my girlfriend is the most beautiful girl in korea.'
