It was posted on here a long way back and I don't recall.

As for the Hoekstra Ad ( way to represent the Dirty Glove, Pete) its not racist, just ignorant and stereotypical.

I mean if anyone thinks China is still about straw hats and bicycles, they really shouldn't be in charge of economic policies concerning China.

Now the website...That's pretty over-the-top. But in the end it just shows a childish view of the issue and one relying on tired old cliches and not talking to Michigan voters about the gravity of the situation and the underlying problems.

Bad acting and bad production values are not racist. How in anyway did this ad show Asians to be inferior? The ad was not about Asians or Asia but about poor policies of the U.S. They posed this actress with a bicycle amongst rice paddies, what would be a non racist way of positioning her? Ric paddies are very common in mainland Asia as are people riding bicycles wearing bamboo hats.

This reminds me of the case a few years ago when a young woman from Cameroons won I think a modeling contest or was name4d a beauty queen. The judges were criticized by educated white people as being racist because she was very dark and had very full lips and her hair was natural. She looked too Black and showing African people not looking like Europeans was racist or something like that. It made my brain hurt.

Considering the point of the ad it would have been pretty hypocritical if they paid an actual Chinese actor to appear in it.

What an awful advert. Whether it's racist or not, it's incredibly cheesy and quite obvious the girl is American (or Canadian) but pretending to speak in poor English

I'll jump in and agree with everyone else that the ad was tactless and made me embarrassed to watch, but not really racist. Horrible acting, bad accent, she has problems remembering her lines, and it would make much more sense if it was a businessman and not a farmer. His website was so bad it made GMarket look professional.

That commercial was pretty well done. I'm sure there are things to criticise in this video too, but it gets the point through and makes it memorable because it reminds us of real history classes.

They aren't really equivalent.
The Korean ads are worse: the goal was tarring and feathering a group of people based on lies and exaggeration, while this American ad (as bad as it is) is more about an issue, and not specifically about trying to make Asian people look bad. It was more about spending and jobs moving away, which is fear mongering maybe, but not directed at Asian people as people specifically. That's an important distinction.

Unfortunately it is a silly ad that certainly isn't flattering to Asians. The girl obviously was a fluent or native English speaker, but the director made her speak as though she wasn't, based on his stereotype of how he thought she should be talking. But he was trying to make her seem like a real Chinese citizen, which totally failed.

I wonder if anyone would have been as offended if it had a real Chinese native speaker speaking in Chinese and just had the subtitles below.

Yeah, the CAGW commercial was a pretty good one. That clearly was not racist. It was a good message and well presented. That wasn't based on stereotype, that was based on how China is trending.

The Hoekstra ad was baffling. Like some sort of bad Nam flashback.

Huh? Does not compute. Although if they'd insisted she look more European they'd be accused of racism too.

Some people just love to use the word "racist" for any reason. It makes them feel empowered as they think they have the moral high ground, but overusing that term where it doesn't quite apply actually weakens it. It's actually a strong word with strong overtones but some throw it out there at the drop of a hat.

I'm skeptical about people who overuse the word. Do they really think they are completely devoid of any thoughts or feelings that might have racist undertones too? If you're gonna throw it out there, you'd better be sure the word applies to the situation and doesn't apply to yourself first. Nobody is perfect.

And there's a difference between calling out a stereotype and straight up calling someone 'racist'. Stereotypes often stem from ignorance, while racism usually has ignorance AND some kind of latent malice attached to it.

I had a coworker mention that ajummas wear sun visors (a stereotype based mostly on age, and one almost any native Korean would agree with, especially in summer) and this gyopo guy called him 'racist' for it. Yet this gyopo guy had no problem saying 'all' British people were 'ugly' and that black women weren't attractive because they were 'too dark.'

He also called most non-Korean workers 'racist' in regular conversation, apparently not realizing or caring that it's an offensive insult in and of itself, especially when it doesn't apply. Huge overuse of the word and hypocritical too given his own views on race.

Most of the time the word racist is used for racial discrimination. I think it has got to the point where they are often used as synonyms. Although I would prefer to keep the two terms separate, I think it would be a futile battle. It is of course even worse when the term is used for something that doesn't even have anything to do with racism, such as pointing out cultural traits or doing factual descriptions. The way the word racism is used today, statistician may be labelled as the worst racists.

Is China Superbowl Ad The Work Of Genius Or Madman?

Quote:
The ads creator, Hollywood-based GOP consultant Fred Davis, is responsible for many of the most viewed and polarizing political ads in recent years.

A radical adherent to Irish poet Brendan Behans old adage that theres no bad publicity, except an obituary, everything Davis produces is designed to go viral no matter what it takes to get there, even if it means dressing up an actor as a demonic farm animal.

Fred Davis = #winning

An Asian-American actress who starred in the controversial ad produced by Michigan Republican Pete Hoekstra's U.S. Senate campaign has apologized for her participation.

"I am deeply sorry for any pain that the character I portrayed brought to my communities," Lisa Chan, the actress, wrote in a statement on her Facebook page. "As a recent college grad who has spent time working to improve communities and empower those without a voice, this role is not in any way representative of who I am. It was absolutely a mistake on my part and one that, over time, I hope can be forgiven. I feel horrible about my participation and I am determined to resolve my actions."

In the ad, which ran in Michigan during the Super Bowl, Chan portrays a young Asian woman riding a bike through a field of rice paddies and speaking broken English while thanking Hoekstra's opponent, Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow, for her "reckless spending."

"Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow," the woman says. "Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spenditnow."
The spot sparked outrage in the Asian American community. "It is very disturbing that Mr. Hoekstra's campaign chose to use harmful negative stereotypes that intrinsically encourage anti-Asian sentiment," the Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote group said in a statement.

In 2010, Chan, who studied sociology at the University of California Berkeley, launched The Strive, a 501 c(3) charity organization "geared towards empowering at-risk youth through inspiration and improved public education."

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, which profiled her in 2007, Chan won Miss San Francisco's Outstanding Teen pageant that year with a platform of "empowering the youth toward an educational revolution" while maintaining a 4.2 grade-point average.

That's interesting she regrets it. I wonder how much they paid her to do the ad. Seems like the minute she saw that dumb script she would have had second thoughts.

Either that, or she realized that it obviously wasn't racist in the beginning. But now that there are probably thousands of emails coming in bitching at her, she has to plead temporary insanity.
