| Government claims it's an illegal settlement. I've known about it for about 3 years now, wanted to do some volunteer work there, but decided otherwise as the government is really heated about the whole issue. |

Its a pretty interesting place. I have been going there regularly over the last few months to develop a photo project ,and have finally made some local contacts...its definitely a place of contrast, some of the poorest people living under the shadow of Gangnam's huge office towers. But the residents are super friendly and after I put some time in there I have been getting invited back to join them in a casual setting....if anyone is interested in keeping track of this project, you scan see the updates on my site: http://lucforsyth.com/blog/
Its a work in progress and I can only do it on the weekends when I'm not working, but its a cool view of a side of Seoul most people don't really see. Feel free to comment.
On a side note, I do a lot of photojournalism style stuff around Seoul, so ideas are always welcome. Enjoy. |

@cdninkorea: You go to Dongok station on the yellow line. Go out exit 4 and walk south for about 15 minutes. Then you come to a T intersection and go through a big gate. The whole area is fenced off, so if you don't go through the gate you wont see it....
A word of advice though...the Korean sense of status and image means that these people will not be especially receptive to strangers walking around with cameras taking pictures of their crappy houses...they will feel exploited and embarassed. I've went there multiple times without taking any pictures and it took over a month to establish a connection to people there who allowed me to take photos comfortably. If you go as a "poverty tourist", the people are going to react to you as such...that said, it is definitely interesting, just make sure you're going for the right reasons, not just to look at people in a shitty situation and move on. | If you watch enough Korean TV, you'll see programs on people who live in places like this. Not this big, but there are plenty of people living in poverty in Korea. |

| These people are holding out to get money from the government or developers. They could afford to move to a one-room like most twenty somethings have, but they want a pay off. Then never paid for the land. |

They don't own the land so there is nothing to sell. The land is owned by Seoul city and SH construction.
It is true that some of them could afford a one room, but no one there is holding out for any sort of property payout. |
