The first season is possibly the worst until the last 3 or 4 episodes (which are excellent). Season 2 onwards is unbelievably good.

Ok maybe I'll try it a third time. I'm not going to bother with the Wire again however, unless they dub it into proper English. |

They are 13 great episodes, aren't they?
I heard some classic Soprano dialogue tonight.
Carmela: in a year tops, your going to have to accept a goomah
Janice: oh yeah! well i'd like to see a goomah that's going to let him hold a gun to her head when they f&^*
Carmela: You let him hold a a gun to your head during sex?
Janice: Yeah, well if that what gets him off, well it's not any different than a garter belt or a nurses uniform
Carmela: but it's a gun Janice! I thought you were a feminist?
Janice: Usually he takes the clip out |

| I liked it until the 5th and 6th seasons. I was committed to watching all of it however, but there were too many examples of bad/lazy writing in those final two seasons. |

| That's the problem with so many shows in the US, why don't they know when to stop? E.g. Lost, Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, The X files, Great shows but they just go on too long. And the comedies too, e.g. The Simpsons, Friends, and the Office (6 series?). Yes they make money but don't the people involved have any artistic integrity? Probably not as they're written by teams of writers who do exactly what the producer tells them to do. In the UK the longest running sit coms are often considered the feeblest. e.g. Last of the summer wine, Allo, Allo....And with good reason. Go out on a high. |

This is a common criticism of US made shows, but the truth is that the stakes are so much higher in the US vs the UK. Rick Gervais has been quoted as saying that the US "Office" made far more money than the UK version. It's pretty hard to have artistic integrity when you are talking about 10's of millions of dollars. However, some people do strive to maintain their integrity, such as John Cleese who has turned down millions of dollars to make more "Fawlty Towers" episodes |

| I think the good shows know when to stop. The Sopranos ending the way it did was made sense for me. And the Wire was actually supposed to go on for another season but they ended due to budget issues. Breaking Bad is set up to end from the very beginning. Can't wait for next season. Community is also only made to be 4 seasons. |

I think your first post explains why you love the show so much that you've watched it 4 times through. You claim that there aren't many characters to love.....that you can'teven cheer for some of the good guys. Well there is your answer. Most shows paint people as either good or bad......and over time you invest time into those you care about and you can become upset when they die. The Sopranos are different........their writers are brilliant.......they make terrible people loveable and present loveable people as people you want to be "whacked." That's how they hook you, they give you characters that allow you to feel good or bad about and that affects your stance on the show. It's brilliant.
For example "Boardwalk Empire" Good show...but with Jimmy dying a lot of people are throwing in the towel........that wouldn't happen with the Sopranos characters.....unless Tony died in season one. |

You are totally right; the writing is second to none - although Deadwood also had some amazing writing.

I for one think that Boardwalk had a much better second season than the first. Jimmy's dying was a surprise, but the show is more about "Nucky" and ultimately the chief character is Atlantic City. |
