Why is it that so many times bad recruiters and and schools won't be named in threads that are started like these?
Please clue me in on that. |
Dave's policy (potential sources of income), ridiculously strong defamation laws in South Korea, a fear of burning one's bridges - There are many possible reasons. |

| Since I'm living in a country that I'm not a citizen of, I don't want to take any chances with legal ramifications. However, I do have a copy of the text message that he sent me and I will be using word of mouth. So anyone who asks me directly I'll say not to use their services. Plus, I want to wait until I've started that other job before I say anything. |

You have not signed any contracts so you are not breaking any laws. This will only affect you if (1) your recruiter bribes the proper people not to hire you and (2) they convince other recruiters not to work with you.
Honestly, you would be treated with less racism back home so don't worry about the consequences. Which makes any threats issued by recruiters rather pathetic and meaningless. |

| I know everyone has responded to me about not having to have an LOR to transfer visa's after my contract expires. However, immigration is saying that I need some proof that I finished my contract successfully and I need that LOR. What if my boss doesn't want to give that to me? Does she have to give it to me or am I screwed? |

She is under NO obligation to provide one but a copy of your (expired) contract will prove that you are no longer obligated to the employer.

| I'm a little late with giving an update on this, but everything went off without a hitch. I didn't need anything, but my passport, arc card, and contract. Plus, whatever the hagwon owner needed to bring oh and 30k won. So, thanks a bunch to those that helped out! |

I finished my last job at a hagwon and am working at a public middle school now in Gyeonggi-do. It's too early to tell, but so far, I enjoy my job. It's a little boring as I started right in the middle of mid-terms, but I know this won't last long, and I'm excited to be a part of the public school system. I to work very hard to earn my keep amongst the students, faculty, and administrators.
But to the point, my recruiter friend (yes, she IS my friend) who helped me get my current job told me to get a LOR from my previous employer, and Immigration did indeed request it and accept it from me when I went to transfer my visa in Suwon last week. I wonder if this had something to do with the fact that I was transferring from a hagwon position to a public school position, or, as I am more inclined to believe, if it's simply the arbitrary nature of dealing with Korean bureaucracy, or bureaucracy in general. |

You need a LOR if you are leaving your job before finishing it OR if you are transferring the visa to a different job.
If you finish your job and get a different visa you do not need a LOR. |
