I don't recall any of the people who recommended Itaewon, claim that it was the only place to get it there.
You can get computers just about anywhere, but if someone asks where you go, people will say Yongsan.
Itaewon is just easy place to do all your foreign goods shopping in one place. Foreign Foods store, and the FFS2 across the street from that. Also right up the street is High Street. Pinoy mart in HBC.
If someone asks me where to get souvenirs, I'm going to tell them Insadong, even though CoEx has souvenir shops also. |
The point he is making is that the knee jerk reaction of a lot of people is to recommend going to Itaewon for foreign goods, when there are plenty of other places that stock these things.
I happen to agree with him, and I've pointed it out on so many of these "where can I find..." threads. I have yet to find a need to go to Itaewon for anything. Campbells soup is sold at my local HomePlus, a wide range of cheese is for sale at the E-Mart, the wine selection at the local LotteMart is fantastic...
Like he said, you have to learn to open your eyes. If you are the least bit flexible, you can find everything you need at one of the big three (or four if you count GS Mart). Heck, I had an argument with a guy on here who wanted gherkins -swore they couldn't be found. That night, saw them at my local GS Super (the standalone grocery store) for 5k a jar.
Moving up the topic, I had a membership to Costco for a year and never used it. Bought a few things for a friend and that was it. The few things that they WERE the sole retailer of weren't things I particularly wanted nor needed and everything else was available at other places.
Long story short, keep your eyes opened and cruise the aisles for what you need.
OP, as far as deodorant goes, if you can't find what you want in the store, another person said G-Market, and that's probably your best bet in the end. |

The only deodorant I've ever found in my "city" of 200'000+ is some weak-sauce, women's spray-on Nivea. And believe me, I've looked at every one of those places you mentioned. For some time the only way to get deodorant was a trip to Itaewon. Now there are some decent brands available online. Also for the record, yes you can get "cheese" outside of Itaewon, but if you really want cheese, it's a trip to Itaewon. (Or more accurately, Hangangjin, the deli next to what's left of the Hannam market.) |

Iw as in Itaewon at the Foreign Food Mart and at the Hyundai Dept Store 2 weeks ago. The Foreign Food Mart was selling the same Ricotta at 35% markup as Hyundai and had less variety. Go to Hyundai Dept. Store by COEX. |

While I don't doubt that Hyundai is cheaper, you also gotta figure Itaewon is basically your one stop place for foreign food shopping.
For example: what if I wanted to make Hummus, make a trip out to Hyundai Dept Store at CoEx and find out they have everything but Tahini. Then I gotta make a trip out to Itaewon to get Tahini. (I know you can make it yourself at home with some sesame seeds, but using the packaged Tahini is a lot more convenient and time saving). Whereas I could've just gone to Itaewon in the first place and picked everything up without going anywhere else.
People who recommend Itaewon don't do it as a "knee-jerk" reaction. They recommend it because that is the go-to spot there are many English speakers there.
BTW, I will check out the Hyundai Dept. Store at CoEx and see what they have. |

I shopped at the Austrian Deli and the Foreign Food Mart for cuts and Indian Groceries. I ordered from nice Deli for Sauerkraut. I did EZ Shop for something else. I also use EMart, Hyundai, Shinsaegae, GS25, Family Mart, Costco, GMarket and Homeplus.
The point is DO explore those places, keep the eyes open. Depending on your location, those places might be more convenient. If someone simply kneejerks into Itaewon they'll have both reduced selection AND higher prices. The days where the 'won was the place to go are over. Heck In my short time here I've seen the changes and the dramatic increase in the cheese selection and foreign grocery selection.
As I said, I think some people went looking for these things back in 2006-2009 and assume things are still the same. |

you should definitely be able to find Ban, possibly Secret at Namdaemun.
fyi, it's quite easy to find in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, so if you head that way, be sure and make a drug store stop and load up |

| If you do go to the Hyundai next to COEX, stop inside COEX mall and find the Sweet Space store. I think they have imported deodorants. I know I've seen other imported toiletries there. They have other interesting imported stuff. Some of it is quite cheap. (Ex. A jar of Prego traditional is 1900) I often stop there to pick up dark chocolate, popcorn (pound bag of unpopped kernels) and some other things. |

| I saw Nivea Spray on Deodorant last weekend at Ilsan Costco. I've also seen it at The Body Shop. |

They will not have the same selection as the deli in Hannam market. |

Haven't been to Hannam Market since 2009, but from what I recall it wasn't that spectacular. The one in Hyundai is pretty much the equivalent of one you'd find at a Kroger or Ralph's back home. |
