Good point jlb! It seems that there are people around who will gripe about whatever package is around... For a bit of perspective, the toughest EFL job I have ever had in Korea is still much, much easier than a normal job back in my home country.

Given the weak economies of most English-speaking countries, the EFL market in Korea is flooded with more experienced, well qualified people, at the same time the GFC has hit Korea too. it is simple supply and demand. Until a few years ago there were tax exemptions for EFL teachers to encourage them to come to Korea. That is life. If people really want more cash and better benefits, go to the Middle-East!

Yes, generally If the rate of pay at a place hasn't changed for 20 years, I'll 'gripe' about it, if you want to put it like that. Then I'll go and get a job at a place where they offer more. It's called the market economy

Exactly as I said edwardcatflap, market economy, supply and demand, thank you for agreeing! For some no matter what their package is there will be a problem, because packages and jobs change (or not), but the person is the same...

I think if you intended that as some kind of insult, you need to make it a bit less cryptic

Which part was the problem? If it is the link, it was meant to be fixed, if it is the form itself, email Dr Park, she will send the doc to you.

IF they don't INSIST that you do overtime, then who cares about the overtime rate?

What would really tick me off would be if people were 'assigned' overtime at a meeting about a week or so before classes started. That is just a way for universities to get around having to hire and support more teachers. As another poster suggested, the overtime rate is a joke.

Do the madatory number of hours to satisfy the contract terms and then relax or go your own way in your off time. Universities will only start making overtime worth it when people get wise enough to tell them to take a hike unless they big up.

You're right about overtime pay in Korea being a joke. Usually it's lower than the regular non-overtime rate if you do the math. I can't believe that such a wide spread labor abuse by schools is seldom ever mentioned on this fourm.

The problem is that if you refuse to do overtime, they might not want to renew your contract or might make your class sizes bigger to maintain the school's cash flow.

At my uni, OT rates range 27 000-40 000 Won or so per "credit hour." This sometimes means you get that certain rate for 45 minutes of teaching. Anyway, there is not enough OT to go around and people kind of scramble around to get what they can get. And you know why they do, even though the pay is "low?" Because it's LEGAL and in the MIDDLE of the DAY.

Of course if you want to work illegally, and on weekends, early morning or late at night, you shouldn't be doing it for 30 000/hour. It's just not worth it.

Sure, there are a lot of factors involved. If you're only getting 50K/hour teaching privates and the university pays 30k/hour for o/t, I can see some opting for it. Those with families or piles of debt might need the coin, for example.

Plus, time is money. If you're having to travel an hour or so round trip to DO a private, then the 'extra' money doesn't mean too much. Some prefer to keep it close to home for that reason alone.

Yeah, I'll for sure take 30 000/hour for a class that is a 5 minute walk from my house. Traveling all around the city for 1 hour at 50 000 (which is actually more like 2-3 hours by the time travel is factored in) just isn't worth it to me.

I watched the Cullen Thomas story on Locked Up Abroad via YouTube a couple of weeks back. Clearly he was earning so well at the kindy that he needed to make extra money by drug dealing... Sad In the book was he marking up the 30 dollars as it would have been valued it today's money?

Definitely more to life than chasing the megabucks.

Anyone with an interview offer? According to their ad, they're supposed to take place this Saturday and the next. I thought with my qualifications that I'd get an interview for sure. Hmm...anyway, hoping for the best.
