I worked at Avalon in Suwon for a year and a half. I have to say for the most part I had a really good time there. I worked in the elementary school part of the company but I was in the same building as the middle school. In total there were about 16 of us foriegners. We all lived in the same neighborhood and hung out together a lot after work. Didn't have too many personality conflict with the coworkers. In a way it was like being in college again and it was nice being able to make friends easily.
Got everything that was promised to me in the end with no problem recieving my severence, security deposit and plane ticket. left for a public school gig that I have been at for a little over three years now. My only complaint was the late working hours and lack of vacation time. Also, I didn't really like not having much say in the material I taught. They were pretty strict on what you could and could not teach. Anyways, if you are a new teacher I would recommend a hogwan the first year. If you have some years under your belt teaching I would recommend against as you may easily get frustrated with the way things are done. Peace!! |

I have worked at two hagwons.
The first hagwon:
-being paid on time - yes
-given adequate housing - yes
-airfare was reimbursed - yes
-paid severance - yes
-not being fired during the 11th month - yes
The second hagwon:
-being paid on time - I was paid on time two of the eight paydays.
-given adequate housing - Absolutely not.
-airfare was reimbursed - They wanted me to pay for my airfare upfront, but I declined to do so. They paid for it. But my foreign co-workers paid for their flights to Korea but never got reimbursed.
-paid severance - I quit after eight months.
-not being fired during the 11th month - I quit after eight months. |
