| Oh yeah... and I also have one girl friend with a nose piercing, tongue piercing, and a tattoo on her wrist and foot. She's gotten along fine as well -- and she's at a Hagwon. |

| I've met a couple people that have an eyebrow piercing and/or some arm tattoo and they are working here. They wear the piercing and you can see it, but it's just not obvious... like, rather small in size. These are people with university job positions too, so obviously they got by and are successful with their work here regardless. |
A few years back, we had a guy show up to an interview at the University I worked for in Korea. He had a rather large tattoo that went up the side of his neck all the way to the side of his face. He also had a nose ring tied to his ear piercing with a chain.
Honestly, I personally do not care about that stuff but lots of employers do care. His candidacy was not retained after the interview as the University had lots of qualified candidates to choose from (he was qualified too). It is a fact of the employment world that general appearance does mean something for many employers and that this goes double or triple when you work abroad in certain countries or when you apply for a job that will put you in front of people (customer service in-store, airport, teaching....).
Bascially, just help yourself and make a limited effort. Once you do get hired and have shown your employer what you can bring to the school as an effective teacher, you can always discuss this topic and put some of the piercings back on. By then you have established some credit with your employer. Before getting hired, in a competitive market, it can be a disadvantage even if we think it should not be one. |
