I've been through a couple of rounds of public school hiring SMOE/EPIK etc and this last time I don't think there was a person in my orientation over very early 30's. I mean, it was really clear who they were looking for.

I know what you mean. I'd like to be able to consider myself as not yet that old and decrepid, but I too have noticed at PS orientations and other meetings I went to that there don't seem to be many folk over the age of 30 and a few who were young enough that they could have been my kids.

However, isn't that more just an indication of who is actually applying rather than necessarily who the employers were looking for?

Really good point. I hadn't thought of it that way. Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the age range!! I think there were also more certified teachers in the mix but it was just an impression.

it's my understanding new applicants for ps must be 55 or under

I did work at a hakwon a few years ago where we had a retired univ from New York who privately tutored at our school - he was over 70, maybe about 72. he was pretty spry and enjoyed it but he was definitely pushing the limit

Yeah, I've always heard 55 was the limit but then I've seen 57 so it's one of those "moving targets". Just referring to public schools btw.

Have known and know lots of people who are over 50 and teaching. Heck my father taught here till he was 66. He would have stayed longer but ill health.

It might be a little harder but if you sell yourself and your pluses you will get hired

Still, with the job market as it is - it might be a touch tougher.

I know at our school, we are moving away from hiring young graduates. Over 30 is considered a plus. Simply put, the older you are, generally speaking, the more responsible, or at least that is what our management believes.

A solid 50 year old would not be a problem, so long as he or she has energy.
