| Yes to cigars and no room for darts? That place will be full of smoke in 2 minutes. Ick. |
Well gosh, Nashvilles did so well. Please tell me you're hitting up Craftworks indoors, Jackobys, the handful of no smoking places that get advertized.
But hey, if you want to sit down for a nice dalkkalbi dinner, Chuncheon has your number. Even the most hole in the wall restaurants were smoke free. |
No, I'm fine with smoking if a place is big enough to air out. If there's no room for darts, it's probably pretty cramped. |

Cool mix of itunes from Australia, Europe, and the USA. |
A few decent screens with sports from each region for that matter, not just American. |

Fair enough, I just hope the nonsmoking places take off enough to warrant business owners considering the idea of whether they want smoking or nonsmoking. As a smoker, I really do. |

There's a place called Taco Cielo in Incheon. Technically, smoking is allowed, but most of the regulars go out to the stairwell to smoke, and happily, because the place doesn't stink up. |

Thank you for all the input received so far.
Unfortunately, there's not really enough room for a pool table.
Smoked food seems like it'd be nearly impossible to do in Seoul; first we'd need a lot of imported wood, second we'd be making a ton of smoke and the neighborhood would not be kind to that.
Spicy chicken sandwich is a good idea.
Sloppy joe is a good idea too.
American sports on TV should happen too.
Don't really have room for Gambrinus on tap, but am looking to stock a large selection of bottles. It might be a part of it.
No room for darts, unfortunately.
Buffalo wings--good idea.
Cigars? Light 'em up.
Stout on tap? Not much room for a selection of draft beers. While I'd surely drink up the stout, few others would.
Pretty waitresses? Done.
Music is already able to be requested.
All good ideas that will help with the overhaul.
More ideas are welcome...[/b] |
How about a vending machine that stocks cans of the harder-to-source beers? Charge bar prices, of course. This could reduce queues for the bartender, encourage people to select something different from 'the usual' and increase the space for your selection.
Maybe not feasible (or intelligent, haha) but I know a lot of people hate waiting for bar service.
Also English magazines for when you're waiting for your mates to arrive or just want a quiet drink alone. |

Self-serve coolers with bottles (not vending machines) have really taken off in the last year or so, so it's not as if this is a horribly unorthodox (or stupid) idea. Anyang/Gunpo has at least five bars that operate as self-serve with a wide selection of beer and charge you for your bottles when you leave. That said, I'm not sure howit would work in a foreigner heavy district where people are coming from all over the place, as I can definitely see a lot of people hiding bottles, etc. |

yeah, it was a bit out there. Some foreign mags wouldn't go amiss, though |

Cool thread.
I've got something to say about online marketing; most of the places in Itaewon have no clue. If you are marketing to foreigners (like businessmen/tourists passing thru who don't know many people) you need to come up on the first page when they Google "Itaewon, bar, pub, beer, girls".
The vast majority of places do not have a stable website and/or it's not in English and listed on Google. Given how cheap it is to get a URL and find a college student web designer there's really no excuse. You can update the site showing what events are happening that week, food specials, etc.
People end up at JJs and Seoul Pub because those come up on a search. |

| Live music is better than canned and keep it classy. There are enough places full of soldiers and ex frat boys who want to grind on a girl. |

That's a good idea, it would be great if there was a place in Itaewon with some cool lounge music, jazz or whatever. Have a cigar and a beer and zone out on the music. Sorta an Asian David Lynch movie setting.
When in Beijing or Shanghai I always find these cool places with a girl singing some laid back smokey tunes, just backed by a karaoke machine usually. Kinda cheesy and classy at the same time. It's so much more interesting than canned K-pop. There was one such place in Gangnam but looks like it closed.
Unfortunately the lack of creativity and fear of taking risks leads people to keep open the same sort of boring establishments. Look at Monkey Beach and their "fire show", it draws customers. Or sure, strippers...is a novel idea since that's not the norm here in Korea, it would be packed every night if located in Itaewon. |
