Are you given a vote on the national budget each year? Do you have a say on a referendum that is being voted upon? No.
A democracy is where every single person votes on every single issue. A republic is where people vote representatives to vote on issues for us. No country since Athens (back in the city-state era) has had a true, direct democracy.
What do people learn in school? This is basic stuff.[/i] |

Many people have posted about why they like living overseas so much. I think this is a very good reason that hasn't been broached.
Someone once posted on this site brilliantly about how we actually have more personal freedom living overseas under types of governments that one wouldn't think would allow for one to have more personal liberties.
But I think this is a huge reason why I love living overseas: I feel freer than I do in my home country. Real or perceived, it doesn't make a difference, I felt much more free in Korea than I do in America. |

Great thread: A. a Canadian lost a girl to an American or their attempt to move to the U.S. was denied. Thats it. But thanks for the concern about freedom in the U.S.
Ho'w that human rights court thing working out in Canada? Kind of puts a damper on free speech doesnt it?

I'm with you there!
It's funny, things don't really change. There was a guy who wrote a book like 2500 years ago in China "when the state steps back, the people open up...when the states steps in, the people slip away".
Sigh...not to be the guy that quotes ancient Chinese literature on Dave's ESL Cafe,  but man the USA should just leave people alone. The more you harass people the more sneaky they become, and the more you will need to harass them to combat their sneakiness. |
