Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I am generally opposed to AC because it results in a vicious cycle of worsening environmental problems (besides, the heat is really not that bad unless you're crammed in a sweaty subway), but the mosquitoes here trump that. After I close the windows, it gets stiflingly unbearable, and I guiltily activate the AC during the peak heat period.

What I do when I don't (guiltily) use AC is get a nice cross-breeze going, aided by strategically placed fans. It gets the job done quite well. If you're adamant about getting AC, I would do what others have suggested and guilt-trip your employer by subtly linking the lack of AC in your apartment to diminished job performance. The key is that it has to be subtle. It will fail if it comes across as an ultimatum.

Bear in mind some deal with the heat better than others. I'm from the north of England and find the winter here a lot more agreeable than the summer

Think cool thoughts. Imagine yourself at the north pole with polar bears and igloos. Should do the trick.

Hey I lived in Bradford for 10 years! You're right though, some do better in hot weather. Girls seem to run a lot cooler and have more surface area to lose heat Wink

If you feel hot now than you should seriously consider something for the upcoming July and August when the daytime temperature wont go much higher than now (no more than 33 Celsius) but with 70% humidity is really unpleasant.
And the worst part is that for about 4 to 6 weeks the night temperature will stay at around 25 Celsius which is not really refreshing.

Just do yourself something good and dont get a standing A/C unit as they are very powerful and use a lot of electricity which can result in a breathtaking bill. I assume your place is not that big anyways so a wall unit is perfectly enough.

Thanks for the good info. Yeah the place is probably an average size - definitely not a cupboard but only an apartment and I'd keep several internal doors closed to rooms that didn't need cooling.

It seems the school's budget can't stretch to keeping me nice and cool at home (damn children's education!! /sarcasm) so I'm going to venture out for a wall unit. A lot of apartments around here have an external and internal split system so it shouldn't be too difficult to source a working used model. Not sure about a fair price, though. The apartment looks as though there already is a hole in the wall for the pipe, just blocked up with something at the moment.

You'll all be relieved and happy to know I finally have a/c in the apartment. You can all breathe a sign of relief that I will be cool when I want to be when at home. Glory be to God in the Highest and Peace to all Men on Earth, Hallelujah and all that jazz Exclamation

But seriously, it's just getting hotter and humider (well done, English teacher!) for the next 2 months so 220k for an installed wall unit seems like a very small investment in my sanity. Thanks to all for the help, and the help of my co-teacher/negotiator/translator.
