| I reckon its just a practise thing...the more you do it the easier it gets and you will find yourself not even thinking about it when you see someone you would like to talk to. If you can make them laugh within the first minute then they will let their guard down and it becomes easy. Get some business cards and I have found its a lot easier. You dont have to be searching for a pen and paper and Koreans will always take business cards. Then its up to them whether they contact you or not, but most of the time they will... |

Korean people actually contact you? You must be a lot better looking and or rich than me 
I've found I always have to make the first move when it comes to Koreans. If I waited for my korean 'friends' to contact me, I swear to god I would see the inside of a casket before I saw them.
It's easy to say, well they are not good friends and can't think much of you.. But if that was the case they wouldn't meet me or reply to my messages or whatever.
You can't win, the other side is having someone contact you every five minutes which isn't so great either.
I think if I gave out 100 cards to koreans, I'd get one person with the initiative/confidence/decency to tall |

wow.. personally i find koreans to be some of the most likeable people i ever met, and if anything, too many people want to call me/be my friend. I never felt so welcome anywhere.
Generally I don't have the confidence to just start a conversation with a stranger, but it seems that so many people (pretty girls included) are curious about foreigners, so more often than not they will start talking to you first anyway.
on another note, it is really interesting that some people have an amazing time in korea and others hate it so much. Are we actually living in a different country? |

Excellent replies. Wow. Thanks all. I think I'm starting to get out of the negative mould I've allowed for several years to fester on my being.
There are many good people here. A smile and a few Korean words go far. They adore a foreigner who can actually make a few good sentences in their language. And you really need that to function and feel like a person, not just a monkey at the zoo.

I think they are likeable too, they are just not good at making the first move. I've discussed it with my friends and they find it too.
I guess my post was a bit cynical, but I was in no way saying I don't like koreans. If I didn't I wouldn't be annoyed at the lack of initiative. |
