Tropical Storm Khanun has been officially upgraded to a typhoon to make the news more interesting and give the impression government officials are doing something, said a government official today.

According to foreign weather services, the tropical storm is moving north by Jeju, which is Korean territory, with sustained wind speeds of 18 meters per second, or 40mph. This puts it slightly within the threshold for tropical storms as anything less than 39mph is regarded as a tropical depression. Category 1 typhoons are classed as storms with sustained wind speeds in the range of 74-95mph.

Tropical Storm Khanun will not strengthen but gradually weaken meaning it will not become a typhoon except in Korean media reports.

Not a typhoon here but still strong enough to rattle and shake the big (door-size) sliding glass windows on the inside of my apartment[ even though the outside ones were fully closed.
