I don't think they used pertinent example sentences for the infinitive use. They used "to" to mean "in order to do" but if you said "I tried to ____", it's not the same.

I noticed one simple thing, maybe I am wrong though.

I tried VERB-ing is 1 action = (TRIED + VERB-ING)
I tried to do is 2 actions = (I TRIED) + (TO VERB)

Here is a basketball example to illustrate.

The player tried making the free throw shot. (implication, he missed)
The player tried to make the free throw shot. (They were busy doing another action and never shot the ball.)
