What blew me away was the enormous screen they set up outside Geckos. Being an 'International Festival" i assumed it would be something like a documentary on Peru, Indian dancing, or Italian art. Boy did I feel stupid when I realized that what they were showing was their beloved Korean dramas. My baflement turned to annoyance once the yelling and crying, so tyical of any K-drama, started to fill the Itaewon air. We go to Itaewon to get away from that stuff. But here we had several hundred ajoshies and ajummas sitting on their plastic chairs watching their ridiculous dramas on a ginormous screen - at an Itaewon international festival.
Scratching my head I head to the pub, hoping the inside music will block out the K-drama, only to find myself afflicted by 'Gangnam Style' being played over and over during the evening.
Sigh.

Was it off the hook? Where are the Itaewon dwellers? |
Err I had to walk through the festival but didn't really take part in it. I was there around 5 or 6 and it was a madhouse. I got pretty pissed off because there was almost no room at all to get around the stage and people were starting to get pushy. That made me start yelling at the worst offenders.
When they first started this festival and it was pretty much all behind the Hamilton, it was a good time. Now it's way too crowded. |

Ah yeah!!
As has been inferenced here before-
Itaewon is the latest cool place in town to be..
A far way removed from how it was perceived before!
This event echoing the Itaewon area is just going to get more crowded and popular amongst Korean folk..
Those who ve always found an escape from the hum drum of Korean life in Itaewon. mightn't approve though!
The landscape just keeps on a changing at a super fast pace. |

Koreans have overrun Itaewon lately. Take a look around the next time you visit. Just like Insadong and other "foreign zones" the Koreans are flooding the area. |

I was also mildy irritated by that big screen showing K-dramas. At an international festival. They can watch their shows on a billion tv screens across the country located in homes, restaurants, convenience stores, taxis, fitness clubs, and countlerss other places. Christ they can even watch them while sitting on a bus or train simply by pulling out their smart phones. Do they really need to erect a massive screen in Itaewon during a 'foreign' festival and show them there? Was that really the best use of the screen at an international festival?
Honestly. |

why do you think they did it? to show off to foreigners that's all..
they don't care about promoting Foreigner things in Korea, they see it as a vehicle to promote Korea to foreigners. |

| Is this the one that used to be a "Foreign Food Festival" and in spite of getting bigger and bigger each year seems to correspondingly be getting crappier and crappier?? Better to steer clear of that thing and jump the subway to Ansan Station for the day if you want "proper foreignness". |

| Korean dramas are crap with crap production value. Yet there is so much pride. The opening credits to Game of Thrones costs more to produce than an entire season of some K drama. |

the blogger ChrisinSK had an interesting observation on his twitter feed about this saying he found it ironic that MBC was a sponsor of this event given their rep for anti-foreigner journalism.
Yeah I find that very ironic |
Here's your answer. MBC paid to have their shows projected onto a large screen in Itaewon.
