I've also had food poisoning here - easily the worst in my life - from eating raw fish. Other than that, I haven't had too many problems, nor do I know of many people who routinely get food poisoning here.
Like another poster mentioned, Korean beer sometimes gives me terrible runs. They can strike during a night out or after but either way, Korean beer does not make my stomach happy. TMI, perhaps, but WTH. |

Havent experienced such a thing before Korea but I had a really bad one here and another less severe case.
I had samgyupsal alone. My wife was with me but she wasnt hungry and didnt eat any. I couldnt leave the close proximity of the bed and the toilet the next day and that was so far the only day when I couldnt go to work.
Wife got really pissed she called some authorities and they checked the place but found nothing.
Needles to say Im not going to eat there again. Moreover the experience was so bad I havent had samgyupsal for over 2 years. |

How did you get food poisoning from drinking coffee? From a machine they use milk substitute. Bacteria doesn't grow in any of that stuff. If you were actually vomiting (food poisoning will almost always cause that) some of the food poisoning was likely viral gastroentiritis (stomach flu). |

Also, food poisoning can sometimes take up to 72 hours to develop, so the culprit could easily have been something else. I'm also pretty doubtful that vending machine coffee could contain anything that bacteria could live or thrive in, as it's about as far away from real food as you could possibly get. |

| If trots are counted as food poisoning then I have it once a week. I had always thought that kinds that make you chunder (Salmonela, Botsulism) were counted as food poisoning and didn't include the business with the other end. Anyway, compared to Sydney NSW, Korea is a lot more a fecund land. Things grow a lot faster here than what I am used to. |

I was curious so I googled. I guess it is possible when the hoses aren't cleaned regularly and start to grow bacteria that the coffee touches as it passes through. Not common, but not out of the realms of possibility I guess that those drink machines on subway station platforms or in bus terminals aren't kept very sanitary. Assuming it was the drink machine that was the source of the poisoning I guess it's also possible that some disgusting pig with a stomach bug didn't wash their hands properly after pinching a loaf and then poked around at the buttons with their poo fingers which Scorpion later touched....but yeah, failing spotting blood in your chicken, or an onset of the pukes 4 or 5 hours later it's often very difficult to isolate the source. |

Me and my Korean lady friend ordered fried chicken from some shop that appeared very modern and sanitary. The chicken gave both of us the most rancid form of food poising ever. Both ends, you know the deal. The pain was multiplied by the fact that the girl I liked had to witness me lose my bowels in my undies, I shit my pants ffs.
My friend called the owner about the tainted chicken to make them aware on how we got food poisoning. Seems rational to call him to possibly prevent him from making the same mistake and getting others sick, right? No. He berated my friend and told her to fuk off and that his chicken couldn't possibly cause food poisoning. I nearly fainted in anger at his reaction. Maybe I had a stroke.
I expected a mianhaeyo at least. There is no accountability here. |

| Food poisoning happens. I've worked in many restaurants in the USA. The stuff that goes on in the kitchen would gross out most people. That being said I never got food poisoning from any place I worked at even though I ate there all the time. |

Brilliant insight.
People or companies that deal with vulnerable food stuffs have an obligation not poison their customers. If they do, there should be penalties.
It's not a small thing. It can incapacitate a person for four or five days and affect their work performance and social life.
It's no laughing matter. |

| Bloody hell, that would be a pretty tenuous social life if it could be affected by four to five days out with some sickness. Maybe if you were a shut in who just happened to have their first date in ten years lined up for the weekend? |

Had it once in 11 years but it was a real bad case of food poisoning.
However, let's not go overboard here, food poisoning leaves you feeling horrible but is not incapacitating for 4 of 5 days. |

I've had food poisoning in the UK and US. I was never incapacitated for more than a day or 2, and incapacitated is stretching it quite a bit. |

Oh yes it can, and it's happened to me. Not in Korea, mind you, but I was laid up for a week after a dinner of raw oysters on the half-shell and steak tartare. |

Or you should have had someone with a little backbone take care of it. A korean buddy of mine was out with his friends, they got sick off something, he went down to the restaurant the next day and the owner paid all their hospital bills. |
