First off, Korea has at least 10 seasons.
Not so Bad Temperate Winter
Freeze your Pee Arctic Winter
Pleasant Spring
Baker's Lung Dusty Season
Monsoon Rainy Season
Warm Summer
Crotch Sweat Humid Season
Why is it Still So Hot Autumn
When Did it Get so Cold Autumn |

I'm trying to work out the logic behind what sort of capitalization system SteelRails follows but it makes no sense.
For people getting pissy about the old hat of Korea's four seasons, you really need to learnto banter. If you do crack a joke already and yet are still on here getting pissy about the seasons thing, I have no advice. Maybe draw some emo art about it to better express yourselves? |

I find the traditional Korean notion of 24 seasons quaint & interesting. Heres an article that details them: http://www.knutimes.com/news/article.html?no=770
The dates vary year by year & most Korean calendars indicate these days. Kind of like a "farmers almanac" but I've noticed over the years that these predictions are surprisingly often on target.
The article also points out that most Koreans have lost touch with this system, which is true.
Same article goes on to state: "There are only few countries which have distinct four seasons like Korea, so we are blessed people." Sigh.
Heres a quiz I like to put to elementary students. "Korea has four seasons. How many seasons does Canada have?" Typical answers: "3?" "2?" "5?" "1?"
Anything but 4. |

South Florida has 3 seasons:
Hot
Miserably Humid with daily afternoon thunderstorms
Perfect
I don't see the allure of seasons. I mean, I guess like seeing the leaves changing or the snow is something that'd be cool to see on vacation, but the whole being miserable due to cold for a large chunk of year doesn't have much appeal to me. At least the 9 month summers back home can be withstood indoors. HVAC seems to be far less prevalent here. Central AC isn't a thing in homes and the stupid floor heating really as effective as a normal civilized heater. |

I agree Zyzyfer. Just find a way to banter or make a joke that confuses them a bit. That's what I always did.
Each time a Korean would tell me Korea is the only country with 4 seasons, I would tell them that's great, but that my hometown has 5 seasons. They would always get a confused look and tell me this couldn't be possible. I'd tell them that in my hometown we have: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Autumn!
That usually put a quick end to the debate/conversation of seasons. |

So is the notion of four seasons, a foreign import? |

| Maybe that's what Koreans mean by 'four season'. All four seasons of roughly equal length. |
Did I stay in a different Korea? I recall there being no more than a month each of spring and fall. |
As a Canadian from Alberta the seasons seem pretty equal.
winter dec-feb (3 months)
spring mar-may (3 months)
hot summer jun-aug (3 months)
fall sep-nov (3 months)
Please don't claim any month with the average temps above zero should be winter, cause it isn't by my standards. |
By your definition January is the only month Seoul experiences winter (according to climate history) so the seasons aren't of even length.
Besides most of Korea and Japan have maritime climates which can't be reasonably compared to continental climates. |

I'll redefine it to being if the average lows are under 0 C. |

Korea certainly has more extremes than I'm used to. -20C in the winter and 40C in the summer
No where else I've lived has a differential of 60C, the ME varies between 10C and 55C, (my part of) Europe -10C and 35C.
I love spring and autumn here and, thankfully, winters are dry and a/c is readily available in the summer. It's tolerable even in the depths of winter and scorchio summer.
As we're playing; the UK has 4 seasons;
Wet and crappy (aka spring)
Wet and cloudy
Wet and blustery
Wet and friggin' freezing
all numbers in this post pulled out of my a** |

Just got asked the question a couple of hours ago from a lady in Busan, said lady who actually lived in Boston for a while. You'd think that living there, she'd glean the idea that Korea's not the only place with four seasons. |
