If I were a tourist, with limited time...just off the top of my head:

63 Building
Seoul Tower
Nam Dae Mun Market
Tong Dae Mun Market
Yong San Market
Han River
Myung-Dong
Insa-dong
Deoksugung Palace
Gyeongbokgung Palace
Changdeokgung Palace
KOEX Mall
Lotte World

Bars, clubs and restaurants can be found anywhere. I would take tourists to pojangmacha, little antique pubs or ajuma run galbi places.

Good list.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but I have one issue here.

I don't understand the hype surrounding the 63 building. I went there a few weeks ago and was very unimpressed. The wax museum is lame, and the aquarium is abysmal. It's a disservice to even regard it as an "aquarium" given that it exists beneath a giant gold-colored building in Yeoido, and is miserably small. I felt some serious natural creature sympathy when I was there.

Every single "exhibit" is way too small, it's crowded as hell, and there is zero natural light for those two pelicans they hold hostage under there. There's a tiny tank with a dozen or so mini-sharks just going in circles, the biggest tank, which creates a circle in the middle of the main area, is full of the same species of giant, bland ugly gutter fish with a massive rock in the middle, and the snake/lizard/guinea pig, etc., exhibits are insanely small. Pretty depressing stuff, from what I experienced a couple of weeks ago.

I've been to multiple aquariums in other countries, but the one at the 63 building is one of the worst, as far as animal limitations are concerned. The otters are cool and have a decent setup, but the rest is pretty dodgy. The two pelicans they have trapped down there were just squawking like freaks at the front of a tiny entrapment, with images of Santorini on the walls, as all these crazy Asian people took pictures of them. Pretty sad stuff, IMO. Not worth the entry fee (though there is a weigukin discount Wink ). But, what do you expect when you put an aquarium in an office building (or office looking building, whatever it is) in the middle of Yeoido. I recommend people boycotting this particular attraction.

I figure anyone looking for the "must-see's" in Seoul is on some kind of stopover.

If someone is asking me for things to see on a trip to Korea, I assume they will probably be better off in China or Japan because anyone travelling to Korea for fun already knows what they want to see.

I love travelling to Korea, but my favourite places are outside of Seoul, and I really think you need to be able to read and write some Korean to get anything out of the country.

I also think the 63 Building is a waste of time. Same with the KOEX Mall, Seoul Tower and Lotte World. Anyone coming from the west is not impressed with these.

I have to admit, that furniture museum sounds interesting!

I'm not sure I wholly agree. If you're from a big city like New York, London, Toronto, etc, those sites may not be too impressive. But if you're from a smaller town, they probably would be. Case in point, my mother lives in a town of 30,000 people and had a great time at the COEX mall.

In any case, I think Seoul Tower is worth a visit for nearly any tourist. It's a nice walk up the mountain and through the park, unless you take the cable car, and you can see the whole city from the top. Maybe it's just me, but I've always felt that if you go to a big city, you should go to some high observatory at least once during your visit.

Having said that, when I visited your home town of NYC, I didn't do that. I wanted to go up the Empire State Building, but the lines were too long and the tickets were too expensive. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Coex needs to be axed from tourist guides. Times Square is so much better in every way.

Even D Cube City is as good, or better than, Coex, and without the insane crowds. Plus they both have more international shops. I'd even rate Myeong Dong ahead of Coex.

One other issue that hasn't been raised is that many official and online tourist guides are outdated in one way or another. Example? Almost all have outdated subway maps.
