There is plenty illegal about working at one hagwan full time as an independent contractor, as you know full well. I don't really understand why the MODS don't ban people from discussing it. As they do with privates

Who said anything about being an independent contractor? There's no legal limit to how much a hagwan can pay an E2 holder.

Focus all your energy on teaching your discipline at Korean uni level rather than be distracted by the ESL uni jobs.. There are hundreds of universities in Korea - have you visited all their websites? Find the websites that list the dept uni jobs as they come up too..
Pay extra attention to the universities of foreign studies...
I'd like to be in your position right now .. Teaching non-esl dept position here... Now is the time to have a non- English phd here..

I would second this post. Many Korean universities look for foreign faculty (non ESL), but have a tough time finding qualified people. Teaching your discipline would also be better for your job situation if you decide to return to the UK. You might not earn as good as in ESL teaching jobs, but I still think it will be worth it.

IF you're a great teacher, word gets around. People come to you.

It starts w/parents. Educated parents. Or in the company sector.

I taught in a hospital. 13 hours straight on MWF and extra classes for kids on weekends. It was very profitable.

If you really want to make money, you have to set it up so they come to you. Don't travel around the city losing time. Time is a commodity. It's precious. There are so many teaching hours in a day. Don't wast your precious time in Korea on a subway or a bus traveling to teach somewhere. That is the fastest way to burn out in Korea, and it exposes you to a host of other problems like random Koreans making a good day bad.

A hospital is the last place immigration will go check for English teachers. They always have a conf room or an office you can do your lessons.

Never teach more than two people at a time, always make them pay one month in advance so they can't cancel on you and not pay.

It works.

Chaps - thanks for your positive responses on this. I think that my best course of action is to compile a list of Korean institutions that have research relevant to my interests and try and approach them speculatively and indeed, via openings where identified. To this end, does anyone have at hand a list of universities to initially point me on my way, no biggy if not, Google is my friend. I think that I'll keep the EFL option open (at uni level) and approach these as well.
