| theres an internet site i bookmarked, it has loads of old korean movies from the 40's onwards. they give a more realistic view of life in korea than most of the modern movies ive seen. The site uses english subtitles too. |
That's useful info. Why don't you tell us the site? |

movies:
- If You Were Me 1 - 5 series (mini-stories about Koreans and foreigners, mostly on the poorer side)
- Take Care of My Cat (bunch of girls and their dreams being squashed)
- Peppermint Candy (about a guys life before he tries to end it)
- Plum Blossom (two guys growing up)
- The Bus Stop (a lonely teacher and student)
- The Unforgiven (a guy having trouble during his military service)
- With a Girl of Black (a girl whose father is a miner)
- Bleak Night (about a father investigating his sons suicide)
tv shows:
- Answer to 1997 (about a bunch of high school kids in their last couple years of high school and 20's)
Don't really like dramas but Answer to 1997 had me interested. Most others are just too sappy and about rich people. No wonder people in other parts of Asia think Korea is amazing. Korea only exports the ones that make the look super rich, no normal or poor people stuff.
I recommend looking up movies by Kim Ki-duk. Most Korean absolutely hate his movies, because a lot of his movies are about the underbelly of Korean society. Movies like The Coast Guard, Samaritan Girl, Birdcage Inn and Bad Guy. |

Daytime Drinking.
Seconded on Kim Kim-Duk. His movies force Koreans to look at those who have fallen by the wayside, and have a much grittier, realistic depiction of the country than you'll get in some movies. The places he shoots look like the places most people live. |

Heres one I just watched: A Sad Story. You can stream it directly off youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RedseMK60GE
Multiple storylines set in modern Seoul. Smart direction. Beautifully filmed. As the title suggests, its melodramatic, but its compelling. |

Ugh, to each his own but I abhor Kim Ki Duk, I think he focuses more on marginalized people than everyday life. If you want to figure out what the life of an outcast in Korea is like watch his movies. His movies are too over dramatic to me and I think the characters act too irrationally to be believable.
I recommend watching some of the reality Korean TV shows they have on cable. If you can get your reading ability high enough they usually have subtitles so you can tell what is going on. Or just read blogs. |

I saw that one. I like that Kim Ki-duk director guy.
But is it "real life"? Only wish I had a gangster life that sick. ^^ |

| Although it is not "everyday life" my favorite Castaway on the Moon has some elements that are uniquely Korean. It is filmed in Seoul. |

Many of his movies go in that direction, but my personal favorite, 3-Iron, does a pretty good job of addressing issues of wealth and gender, IMO. Samaritan Girl? Not so much. |
