Personally, yes it is a bit worrying. Like you said by the sounds of it South Korea will respond full force to any provocation this time, which could then turn into a vicious cycle with each responding at ever increasing rates and before you know it there's a war happening.
At the end of the day and going by past instances it probably won't esculate any higher than it has in the past, but no one, certainly no one on this forum, truly knows what's going to happen. |

I went to Korea when the Norks were kidnapping foreigners off the streets of Seoul. I cut my teeth on Nork soil at the northwest border area on Kangwha island. Pulled a Nork runner out of the water near the bridge at Kangwha Eup.
Aye was trollin' along for a walk one day, and saw this half starved young man with a look in his eye - that of a man that had found freedom. What a happy face. He now does executive work for a company he founded in Instanbul, in exporting. Those were the real days of danger, when you knew that around every corner, behind you on the subway, or even in safe-havens; the shadow could be lurking with a knife big enough to carve out your heart in a few seconds. The shadow of course, was the main Nork agent stationed in the south. He normally would kill defectors, but quickly saw an opportunity to target the ELT NET population once people started showing up in droves, with their backpacks full of goodies from Nepal...they would set up shop and make money until their next adventure. Then when Jerry died, they all went back home mostly.
So don't ask me if I would still come to Korea with this bobo clown bozo in charge. I'd not only come, I'd make him wear tie-dye dresses and I'd stick that fat finger where the sun don't shine and make him dance a jig for laughs.

| Is Paju a place to worry about? I may be coming to teach there. I've heard it's very safe as far as crime goes, but is there something to worry about with the DMZ and the tensions between North and South? I've been told by recruiters that no place is less safe than any other place in South Korea. Is this true? Anyone know from experience? Are there any current teachers in Paju to respond to this, or anyone have any friends working there? |

Untold numbers of South Korean umbrellas have gone missing in local eateries, North Korea blamed, see page 17 f/details |

| Yes, I need a job. I graduated from university and couldn't find a job so I did what everyone else does, go to Korea. Since the economy isn't getting any better, looks like I'll have to do another round in Korea. |

LOLOMGWTF. While I do admit that a great number of losers come to Korea with zero interest in the culture and language with their aim only to pay off their school debts, I do find your somewhat cavalier attitude to be extremely off putting.
Give the effing land that'll pay your debts some effing respect.

I think I enjoyed living/working in South Korea as much as I have anyplace else, and I met lots of really nice, caring people. Although there's always been some potential danger due to the geopolitical context (since the Korean War), it's otherwise been a relatively very safe place.
If I hadn't reached the mandatory retirement age for teachers (62 for Koreans = 61 for westerners) I'd probably still be there (but might consider gearing-up for a quick exit strategy - to at least get out of harm's way - should an outbreak of war really start happening.) |

I asked my Korean friends and coteachers. They said they would wait a year. To them, this is all new and a little bit different than in the past.
My opinion? I don't believe anything awful will happen, but the won might tank and if the main purpose is money...then really consider that as a possibility. |

Not worth it with the likelihood of the Korean Won tanking right now. |

| To be honest if North Korea did attack, wouldn't it be one of the most interesting things that you would experience? Some artillery in Seoul then you could be a witness to the massive assault moving towards the DMZ. |

It's already happening. The won is losing value now.

the won is not tanking, compared to 2008 levels its in pretty decent shape.
I'm a first timer heding out for korea ina few weeks and honeslty am not liking all these inferior minded ideas of esl teachers as 'losers'. I dont know , maybe i am a looser but in my book a loser is not someone who has the balls to take life by the horns and move half way across the world just for the fun of it. and even if its motivated by money, so what? historical materialism anyone? |
