Head to the nearest American air base... just in time for the NORKs to chem the air fields with their scuds.
Me, I'm just gonna grab an OB, sit in my apt and enjoy the fireworks. |

i clicked on that link.
then clicked on the link for 'The US Embassy has a plan in place'
and got... 'The webpage cannot be found'.
i don't see the point of registering with the embassy. are they gonna come pick you up? no. if the internet is working they should have evacuation plans up for all to see. if it's not working they can't email you with the plan or updates anyway. besides, if a war DID ever break out don't you think the north would know the location of those evacuation sites and start shelling those places in an effort to take out as many americans as possible?
or am i crazy paranoid for thinking this?
and for people not in the same city as evacuation points, can you imagine trying to get to them? the roads will be jammed with traffic like on the first episode of the walking dead. except for those in southern kyoungi province. they are advised to head NORTH to pyeongtaek.LOL they'll be the only fools on the road heading toward the front line. |

If a war did break out why would the North waste time and ammo on killing citizens when the U.S/ South Korean military is firing back on them? Concentrating on civilian targets while you are being killed by military targets...who would do that??
And by the time people reach those evacuation points (most will be on foot) the south Korean military and the U.S military will have had ample time to respond and take out most of the artillery anyway.
They may shell Seoul in a surprise attack but after that are going to have to protect themselves from the counterattack. |

except in seoul, where the evacuation points seem to be a skating rink and some stadium, aren't all the other checkpoints US army bases?
or is camp humphreys a casablanca themed summer camp? |

Well, if you hear air raid sirens, just do what you normally do. Odds are its a per-scheduled drill and your diving under the desk would do little more than get you laughed at by your students.
If you hear incoming artillery fire and explosions however, then follow whatever plans there are and above all be calm and do what people in uniform tell you to do. |

For the newbies, here's what you do...
Every month there's an Air Raid drill.
When you hear the siren, you're supposed to proceed immediately to the nearest shelter.
The shelters are marked by "Double Barber Shop Poles" and they are located in basements. |

You should always have 60,000 won (in 10,000 bills) on you at all times as you will need it to pay the fee in the bunker. |

I'm just going to ignore all of the unhelpful "witty" postings.
For the people who posted serious replies...

What you're saying here makes complete sense, of course.
But...I'm not talking about freaking out and diving under my desk at work when there is a drill. I'm talking about when something real happens.
If it is in the middle of the night (or some other time when we don't have direction around) and there was no one to direct us, or no one in uniform to give instructions....my question was what do we do then.
Suggestions to follow "whatever plans there are" are great. But what are those "plans"? Right now it seems like a complete mystery. How do we know what those plans are? That's what I was looking for. It's doubtful that there is going to be someone around in uniform who can tell me where to go.
T-J gave some good information about the signs for the emergency shelter and the subway stations. I really appreciate that. |

Find a basement or subway or air raid shelter. Sooner or later a uniformed civilian or military person will be there to direct people. Do what they say.
Here- video that explains things.

Or article with the latest Ronald Reagan movie in it.

While there is a slight tongue in cheek to this post, the advice is sound.
Try to have the good luck that you are inhaling and exhaling at the right time when one lands nearby. |

If I'm going out, this sounds like a good way to end it. Bottle of soju and the comfort of a woman. |

1. I assume since you clicked on the link, you are at least somewhat interested in the info. Pro Tip: Do not rely on 3rd party sites for info when getting the info directly from the source is likely to be much more reliable. Try this link for the process: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=US+embassy+Seoul+evacuation+plan
2. The reason for registering are numerous, among the important ones have to do simply with numbers. If the US has "somewhat" of an accurate count of citizens it needs to take care of in regards to evacuation or even just sheltering, this gives them a better idea of how many MRE's to have on hand, bottles of water...evac points where there are likely to be far more American citizens than others (Seoul points are likely to have far more people than Busan points for example), and most importantly..speeds up the process of logistics if and when something were to happen and you actually arrive. If the shells are falling, Im sure you and many others would like to get process and moved on your way as fast as possible.
3. I agree that an evac point may not be a great place to be. In my case here in Daegu, the evacuation point is Camp George. Im not so keen on the idea of rushing to a US base (read, target) in that kind of situation. Furthermore, I certainly do not want to be on a military airplane flying out and hoping not to be shot down.
In the end, registering is not likely to make much difference to us..and yet, its not really a big deal to do it. Takes all of 3 minutes to do, and gives those at the embassy more info that only facilitates what they will be expected to do. |

Coincidentally it's (at least as of a year ago) generally the 15th of the month.....today....In my town you'd hear sirens sounding around 2pm for a couple of minutes, and the all clear siren would sound around 15 minutes later.
The quarter of an hour where the traffic was supposed to stop and people move off the streets was a surreal time. Deserted. Like something from The Matrix. Very occasionally the town would get buzzed by low flying fighter jets from the local air bases too.
Usually they hang flags in the street a day or two before the air raid drills.
The South Koreans tend to get blase about the warnings when it's been relatively stable with the Norks, but at times like after that island was shelled, the Cheonan sunk etc. people take the whole thing a lot more seriously. Wouldn't be surprised if based on the rhetoric and slightly higher than usual threats coming out of the north these days to see the air raid drills being conducted over the next couple of months just to pull people's heads out of the sand.
Extremely unlikely you'll ever have to use it, but it pays to at least know where the nearest underground parking garage to your place is. |

Concerning the air raid drills...
I've always been curious as to why these were not somehow structured for indoor facilities as well! Of course if you are outside you notice it...but if you are inside these things come and go without notice.
I would think if the government were interested in making people aware of the drill, and the fact that the majority of people are indoors at 2pm...there would be a system in place where alarms would go off inside schools, companies, department stores...etc...and there would be a process of some sort (people moving to the basement floor, or otherwise hiding under desks...etc)
Strange that it goes by pretty much without notice unless you are out and about when it happens. |
