Here is a Louie Theroux documentary about how rough Philadelphia is.
There's drugs, guns and gangs. The police don't have it easy.
In general I really like Louie Theroux's stuff.

One of my favorite films of all time, happens also to be the first feature-length documentary ever made.
Nanook of the North: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZLROkFqG-k
Fascinating story & intrepid film-making. |
Uh, sorry to be the one who has to say this (unless I'm missing the joke), but it's been proven that Nanook of the North was staged. Those weren't his wives, and I believe Nanook wasn't his real name. I've never seen it, but I have heard it is still cool to watch. Maybe not a 'documentary', though. |

I'm no expert. I do find it an intriguing bit of old footage.
Heres another docu I recently watched: The Real Buddy Holly Story. Really nice production, fascinating story, up there among the roots of modern music.

Blind Spot - About peak oil
Inside Job - About the 2007/08 financial crisis
The Lightbulb Conspiracy - About how most products today are designed to fail
The Take - About a coup in Argentina that left the country in shambles and the subsequent resistance
Collapse - About one guy's take on the end of industrialized society
Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers - More like a 50-minute anarchist music video than a doc
Zietgiest (the original) - Religion, 9/11, and central banks
Any film by the Yes Men - Satire about neoliberalism and the World Trade Organization
... those are just a few that come to mind. There are a lot more that I just can't think of off hand. |

Go to Youtube and search "BBC Documentaries". Some decent ones to be seen according to taste. |

****Mild Spoiler
Knowing that this guy made his fortune based on the system of "cheap money" that brought the global financial system to its knees, it was an absolute pleasure to watch him squirm. |

Not a documentary, but I watched "Days of Heaven" twice over the last few days, and, wow, what an amazing film. It's a little slow and was made in 1978, but it's funny how it was pretty much trashed for nearly 30 years, then all of a sudden holds a 95/100 metacritic score, after Roger Ebert rediscovered its brilliance. Such a great time piece. Terrence Malick is a badass: wrote Dirty Harry, directed Badlands, The Thin Red Line, and the Tree of Life. I'd consider all of those must see films. The opening scene of The Thin Red Line is possibly the best opening movie scene ever, IMO. Badlands is just a boss film, as well, Emilio Sheen at his best, and The Tree of Life is like an ayawaska trip of a flick. My 2 cents. Wait, screw that, I'm putting 2 million cents in the pot. Watch those movies, fookers. |

I saw "Dick Cavett's Watergate" yesterday. It's a good watch for anyone interested in the affair or 60/70's US politics.
The blurb from PBS:
Quote: |
From 1972 to 1974, the Watergate scandal was frequently a part of “The Dick Cavett Show.” In fact, Cavett was at the forefront of national TV coverage, interviewing nearly every major Watergate figure as the crisis unfolded. With exclusive access to the archive of the show, DICK CAVETT’S WATERGATE documents the scandal in the words of the people who lived it: from the botched burglary at the Democratic National Headquarters; to the must-see TV of the daily Congressional Watergate hearings; to the ongoing behind-the-scenes battle between the White House and “The Dick Cavett Show,” culminating with the resignation of President Nixon on August 9, 1974. DICK CAVETT’S WATERGATE offers a unique opportunity to mark the 40th anniversary of a defining moment in American history. |
