It's happening in the USA too. I guess people everywhere are under more stress than ever before due to the current economic crisis.

Take a look around at the faces on the subway, what a sad place.

I always thought they looked quite happy. Guess it's all relative.

Please tell me of this magical land where people riding the subway to work/school are smiling at all times.

Ah, the ol' "It's just as bad in the U.S." argument.

Which is more shocking and disturbing?

This?
Quote:
The overall national suicide rate in the US climbed from 12 suicides per 100,000 people in 1999 to 14 per 100,000 in 2010.

Or this?
Quote:
South Korea, already facing one of the worlds highest suicide rates, has seen those numbers double in the last decade, and the government is facing pressure to come up with a solution to the spiraling problem.
South Koreas figures for 2009 show more than 40 people killed themselves each day, more than double the number who committed suicide a decade ago and is a five-fold increase since 1989.

Quote:
Data culled by Statistics Korea showed that more than 15,000 Koreans committed suicide in 2010, which is a 50 percent increase from 2006. This means there have been 33.5 suicides per 100,000 people, which make South Koreas suicide rate the highest in the OECD for the eighth year running.

Yes because the subway commuters back home where you come from apparently stroll on the train bright and early Monday morning whistling happily.
I wonder how many of them say things like "Oh joy oh bliss I just love getting up at 7 AM to take a two hour commute to a job where I am underpaid, overworked and under-appreciated."?

The school system here is certainly not without blame. I'm sure most teachers here have noticed how students who are not extraordinary are mostly left to fend for themselves in a system that wishes there were fewer of them. Tack on the fact that there are something like 2 respectable universities in the entire country, and the only way to get into those universities is to be either A: Rich, or B: In the top .00001 (maybe an exaggeration, maybe an underestimation) percentile.

Then you work 14 hour days at Samsung for corrupt, untouchable bosses for the rest of your life.

The thing that really stands out is the female rate. The highest not just in the OECD, but the whole world.
Why? What is it about Korean society that causes this?
It's not just the old answer about how women are treated badly here etc., becuase there are plenty of countries where the plight of women is far worse. Living in Japan I would say that women there were treated about the same as they are in Korea. No big difference.

From my peronal interaction I've found a lot of females here have these ridiculous fantasies about how their life is going to be. Driven along no doubt by the constant stream of dramas presenting this dream life of living in a house, being pursued by successful men who happen to be handsome too, wearing the latest fashions and so on.

The superficiality of society?
I teach a girl and she is, for want of a better word, ugly. I know it sounds stupid, condesending and hypocritical, but i feel so sorry for her. She's going to have a crap life. She hasn't got a chance of getting the "dream".

Sorry. I must have temporarily forgot the Dave's rule that says if two posters have already commented on something then you can't comment on it again.
