The bus drivers I have encountered have been alright. It's the female passengers with handbags that are a growing problem. They occupy one seat and have their bag in the adjacent seat and won't let people sit down. They're not being racist toward me, because they're not letting other Koreans sit down either. There aren't any verbal confrontations either. People just stand in the crowded aisle and the handbag gets to ride in its own seat.

I've only seen people with backpacks do this. When I see this, I just sit down on top of their bag and then act all surprised.

Do you know how much that bag cost!

It's only fair that it gets its own seat!

Well don't just stand there. Ask them to move their bag.

I've seen the handbag thing. They'll try to ignore you, but if you say excuse me---maybe have to repeat it-- they'll with reluctance, eye rolling, and sighing, move the bag(s).

What self absorbed people. Who in their right mind thinks they can take up a seat for their purse.

Call the bus company (or you wife can call).

We were refused boarding last summer while on vacation and we had a stroller too (for my niece).

The driver was at fault, he acted like a jerk. It happens.

While there are still prejudiced Koreans out there, I dod remember being told to wait for the next bus once because I had my bicycle with me. I took my front tire off and stuck it underneath in the luggage area. Don't think there was room, so the bus driver told me to take the next bus. No biggie. If your bus was empty and there was denial, maybe you could charge prejudice. But, if it's full, maybe there just wasn't enough space.

As an aside, in many cities, bicycles are not allowed onboard public transit during the busy hours to avoid loss of space. If a bus is crowded, it would not seem smart to try and briong a bike onboard. If the bus has an undercarriage area for bulk items then that is different but the driver may not want to lose the time it takes to get off, open the compartment and get back on. Remember that in many Korean cities, buses are owned by private companies that manage a certain number of lines. As such buses compete for passengers sometimes.

I've never seen the handbag thing. I would love to tease someone about it though. Is it common?
