It would be one thing if you got actually half-way decent musicians there, but odds are 9/10 you've got idiot kids banging away on drums or some half-assed band with dumb Korean students bedazzled by it all and foreigners taken in by the surprising discovery of Korean "free spirits".

You are a nationalist, conformist dolt. There is no doubting it. You'll spend page after page critiquing those who criticise the torture/ death of dogs and then in this thread critcise anything that goes against the norm. Oh man, Koreans banging away on drums? They should be singing to their Kpop, ballad crap while eating overpriced chicken seperated into nice neat groups at tables where they won't even get the chance to interact with the people at the table next to them. Mingle? Attend shows with kids playing drums and bass guitars and trying to rock out? noooo that sounds like North America. This is Korea darn it.

The park is full of hipsters, Korean or North American...just about everybody there is shameless a hipster. I don't see any starving artists, I see a lot of spoiled college kids trying to front. The park has become a sign of the new "progressive" Korea, and all the fake, shameless baggage that goes along with that title. And I hate walking down the street hearing a friggin Jason Mraz cover at every corner. I also hate hearing about how artsy and free spirited Hongdae is when it also happens to be the very place I've experienced the most hostility from Koreans. If this is what the future holds for a westernized Korea then I hope the government starts looking toward China for direction. I know the rich liberal know it all college kid type when I see it, and I've seen it more than I care to in that park. If PGH does clear that place out it will at least give the kids something to rebel about. There are some spots in Hongdae that are decent and still pushing the envelope, but I don't think the park is one of them.

And I have to laugh at how Steelrails finally criticizes something in Korea and everyone knocks him for it. Just can't win.

You know, I tend to agree with a lot of this. Not sure about the hipster stuff, but Hongdae is the place where I've experienced the most hostility from Koreans, by a long shot. Granted I've spent a good deal of time there, and it's not like I'm being harassed all the time, but it's more like the occasional overheard snide remark, etc. that seems to happen more frequently.

It's also where Matt Lammers was stabbed with a busted beer bottle a few years back, where fights break out on a regular basis, etc.

Even so, Hongdae is by and large a very, very safe place- much like the rest of Korea (speaking from a male perspective, here). But anytime you throw a ton of booze, bars, chicks, and young people together, you'll have problems from time to time. Add in some nationalism, and occasionally bad things will happen.

Hey man, a lot of those bands are actually quite good. It is nice to see Koreans who are not conformists.

How is being in a band mean you're a non conformist.

Girls Generation are about as non-conformist as you can get dude.

Was that meant ironically? If not, please elaborate, because when I see Girls Generation, I see another product of the Korean identikit pop-band mill - albeit more successful than others.

Were they dressed gangster? If they were then ten to one they were LA Gyopos. These guys are way more aggro than your average Koreans and seem to be always hanging around in Hongdae.

Is that place a park? I've seen more grass in a joint than at that park. It's a cemented corner with some plants growing among the puddles of puke. There are always loads of terrible spotty students wailing away and a crowd of idiots standing mesmerized.
It's no surprise there are loads of drunk idiots wanting to fight in Hongdae. They probably get knocked back by girls all night and when they see a handsome devil like me with a beautiful lady they get jealous. Look at the state of their faces, they have nothing to lose. Whereas my adonis like features could be ruined. Best avoid these idiots.

I enjoyed Steelrails posts.

The non conformist Koreans can be found in the gay/transgender bars in Itaewon. Those poor bastards are the antithesis of Korean culture.

Actually, in many cases yes. And their English seemed better than someone who studied only at their local 'ABC Tree' hagwon, so it's quite possible these yoyos are from LA. I've also run into a similar class of people in Gangnam, where they seemed even more aggressive. Sittin around calling each other the n-word between shots of cherry soju, etc.

Idk, I'm liking Hongdae less and less as time goes on. It's still a decent enough place to grab a bite to eat, suck down some beers, and watch things go down the tubes after sundown, but generally speaking I have a much easier time scoring poon in other areas (not to mention generally have a much better time overall).
