Do you want the open-minded ones that would go to a foreigner bar in Itaewon or Hongdae to find a foreigner?
Or do you want the open-minded types that would think in order to meet more open minded foreigners, they should avoid the ones who hang out at foreigner bars in Itaewon and Hongdae?
The former is usually quite foreign themselves or not open minded. The latter is likely going to say 'no English' as a test of sorts to avoid answering questions such as 'can you use a fork?' or 'do you think hamburgers are too greasy?'.

How about your employer? In order to have the means to hire you, they certainly must have intelligence and critical thinking. In fact, sense they are hiring you and not vice-versa, they probably have more intelligence and critical thinking than you! You could ask them for advice.

Anyways, before seeking "intelligent and open-minded" people, perhaps one should look honestly within themselves and decide if they are indeed intelligent and open-minded. Perhaps they should first test themselves with some objective measurements and then proceed to going into odd social situations with people of greatly different opinion and seeing how well they can empathize with them.

Are you one of those people back home who had 5-10 different groups of friends who had radically different lifestyles and political opinions, as well as racial/religious/age and socio-economic backgrounds? If so, there is probably a good chance that you are indeed an open minded person. If on the other hand you only had one or two groups of friends and they largely agreed with and looked like you and all felt the same way about things, then there is a strong chance that you are not open-minded.

In fact, if you need "intelligent and open-minded" people, I have to suspect that you are not open-minded. An open-minded person can hang out with anyone of any educational background, who hold a wide variety of beliefs, some of which are quite firm. An open-minded person can find the intrinsic qualities in someone who may not possess great intelligence but nonetheless make them a fine human being.

Where do you find those kind of people anywhere? Go out and meet people and chances are you'll find at least a few.

Social darwinism? Someone in the position to hire other people is always more intelligent than the ones he/she hires?

A president of a nation would then be the most intelligent person of all - and we've all been proven so wrong, haven't we?^^

The point being, your argument is very flawed.

Actually, in a functioning representative democracy, the President is the employee of the collective people.

There are limits to that view of course, hence the word 'probably', but I'd wager that the person owning the McHagwon is better at the ol' Critical Thinking and Intelligence than the workers. There are exceptions of course, but who would you put money on?

So, regardless of whether such people exist, where is a good place to meet Korean people who value and show individual intelligence and open-mindedness?

Please don't respond with something so general as 'Seoul' or 'Hongdae'.

And if you don't know, yet believe on the basis of your limited experience that there is nowhere, please don't comment. Cool?

Is there a word limit?
Should I use semi-formal language in my reply?
Should this place of congregation have at least two fire exits?
Is it okay if the Koreans I recommend smoke?
Would you like me to do a little jig to amuse you?

OP - if you are intelligent and open minded then the Korean intelligentsia will find you. If you have not yet been summoned then you should take that as a sign you did not make the cut.

How about making friends with foreign students at the universities? I think they tend to have more Korean friends than the average EFL teacher, so you'd have more chance of finding the people you want to and your social circle would be really varied. As long as your definition of 'open minded' doesn't loosely translate to 'agrees with me' this should work.

Good idea.

Many people think the younger generation in Korea is more open-minded than their parents. Maybe you should try making friends with some really young kids.

Search naver for "how to find young Korean boys and girls to talk to".

Might wanna get your coworkers to help translate that into Korean for ya.

This is a good point.

Then again, maybe the OP isn't open minded at all and that is why he needs an open minded Korean. He needs someone that understands he doesn't know what is going on here. I know I need that quite a bit. Don't worry OP, if I have Korean friends then there are definitely open minded Koreans out there.

Someone's a little too condescending to recognize a joke?

Yep, like meeting people who aren't able to recognize a joke.

There are very specific rules which one should abide by when making a joke on the forum.

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/05/how-to-tell-a-joke-on-the-internet/309293/

He/she broke the sacred rule, so he/she paid the price. Ignoring internet forum posting rules is a serious offense - he/she is lucky I did not forward his/her message to the Koreansentry site agents^^
Besides, rape/pedophilia jokes are seldom funny - unless you put 20 emoticon after the joke to get the point across.

i think any coffee shop after the kids have been dropped off at piano lessons? the people in there always seem to have a lot to say.
my guess is that their philosophising about the world they live in.

But seriously though, there are departments of university that study specific disciplines (for example necklace making and police administration). Find one that teaches psychology or what ever it is you want to talk about and approach the students.
