A week and a half ago I interviewed with a hagwon in southern Gangnam. Following the interview, the director asked for my contact information and put me in touch with the current teacher, whom I might replace.
Then on the same afternoon I got a strange message from the recruiter who arranged the interview, indicating that the hagwon called her and decided not to offer me the position.
A few days later, since I never called the current teacher, the director contacted me directly and asked me to call the current teacher. I spoke with the current teacher, and everything was quite fine. But later, when the recruiter I'd dealt with asked to speak with the director, her call wasn't returned.
So, the director thinks I will accept the job from them directly, thereby avoiding the recruitment commission. Not only did the director attempt to deceive the recruiter, she also lied to me when she asked for my contact information, explaining that she was not trying to (I forget her exact words) do without the recruiter.
---
In Taipei, hagwons usually recruit their own teachers.
In the past, I just taught in a public school to avoid this kind of BS, but how common is this, anyway? How common is it for a hagwon to use a recruiter and then circumvent them to avoid paying commission? |
Yeah, I would definately steer clear. If they are willing to screw over a recruiter, they may be equally willing to do it to you. It's a matter of character.
As for Taiwan, all hakwons recruit their own? Is it that easy for them to find people? I'm just curious; is that market really flooded? |

I think they've just worked out that recruiting teachers isn't rocket science.
Post an ad on the Job board and wait for the resumes to roll in.
Provided you can speak English and know what immigration requires (which takes all of about 10mins to find out), you've just saved yourself $1000. |

That makes no sense. Your recruiter who you say is deceitful gives you hagwon contact information, the hagwon contacts you, the hagwon gives you another teacher's contact information, and.....................:::drum roll:::
YOU DO NOT CONTACT THE TEACHER
until waiting to be rejected. I ask you boy, who are you horse squawling boy? I am onto you boy.
I tell you and Foghorn Leghorn would tell you, no boy in his right mind would wait until being rejected to call a teacher.

So, you are saying because you paid for a cheap flight to Korea you should be given a job which amounts to ambassador privileges? I don't care how you got here. I don't care how low the fare is.
This job teaching English to Koreans is like working on a farm picking tomatoes at half minimum wage. You get 1 year to live somewhere then you are homeless.
Time to wise up boy. Get money where you can get money. You will not survive in China, and I heard the kimchi is no longer served at GEPIK lunches.

Ok, ESL superman. Rid the world of evil recruiters and schools that try to employ teachers directly.
When I replied initially, I didn't expect such fervent opposition to the idea that they simply let the recruiter know they got the job at the school.
What is between the school and recruiter is their business. Just because a school tries to hire a teacher directly doesn't mean they are bad. We don't know the recruiter's past history.
It is possible the recruiter got the school a teacher, that teacher didn't show up, the school already paid commission and now the school is left without a teacher. They might feel the recruiter owes them. This happens too. Again, we don't know the full story to condemn the school. We only have a piece of the puzzle.
If you want to be paranoid about it, sure don't take the job. However, you could clearly size up the school and ask other pertinent questions regarding housing, payment dates, schedules, contract, etc....
If the school is really bad, then you will see other problems easily.
Any teacher expecting some uniform recruitment process will sadly be mistaken when they see themselves alone and a visa running out. Getting a job is more survival then it is pomp and circumstance. If you want to let it expire and not take a position, you are welcome to fly home and another teacher will take it. Your call McDuff. |

Agreed as well. We dont need these types giving advice in this forum. The guy doesnt even live in Korea anymore yet hes back here picking fights with people. Must have an awesome life in China if he spends so much time here talking about Korea |

LOL, I wasn't trying to pick a fight. Don't call previous teachers, I don't care. Don't question schools on your own. I don't care.
If you think recruiters are to be trusted every leg of the journey, go ahead. I am simply giving feedback from my experiences. When a school is bad, they do more than just screw the recruiter.
That's the ironic thing, the original poster is worried about that but yet they didn't call a previous teacher to confirm this or ask the school any questions. |

| Youre not giving feedback. Youre attacking posters. 3 DIFFERENT posters have called you out on it because you sound like a mad man. Dont expect to be taken seriously here if you cant give advice without attacking people. |

Looks like 3 people attacked me (I don't see anything they contributed). I stand by my advice:
1. Tell the recruiter you got a job with the school. If the recruiter is owed money that is between them and the school.
2. Talk to previous teachers, don't wait.
3. Ask the school questions and read the contract.
If the above seems like an attack, that is for you to sort out. The screen, mouse, and keyboard you are using have no feelings. I don't care what you believe or what you think I intended. It doesn't change the situation.
Punch the screen harder, call me names, do what you like. Get that anger out guys. If you want to come back to the table and play nice, then we can continue when you are ready. |

| Although recruiters are not exactly to be pitied or defended, since so many are equally unethical, the fact that your school hasn't played by the rules with regard to the recruiter should be a huge red flag. There is a large segment of hagwon bosses who have a "the rules don't apply to me" attitude. That attitude is usually linked to a "any behavior is okay if it saves me money" philosophy of employee relations. If he's willing to screw over a fellow Korean, be assured that he won't hesitate to screw over a foreign worker. Luckily you have witnessed his motus operanti at an early stage. Proceed with caution. |

1: Usually the recruiters tell you that you got the job, not the hagwon directly. If the school is using a service and the recruiter did work for that school, then that recruiter should be paid for their work. The fact that the school is trying to get free labor from someone shows the school's character right off the bat. It may not be your problem directly, but anybody with half a brain can see that this situation could happen to them in the future.

He had the interview and the same day, maybe a couple of hours later, he got a message saying he wasn't hired. Maybe he didn't have a chance to call the teacher yet. Then why would you call the teacher after being told that you didn't get the job?
3: This is the only part that makes sense. Pretty much just read the contract carefully and post it on this site for others to read to make sure you didn't miss anything.
Looks to me like they are looking for a sucker to take that job. |

I agree, that's how I felt. The situation was weird, but I never pressed them to clarify it. Actually, I had basically forgotten about the position until eventually they made an offer through the recruiter, and I accepted. The contract was fine, and everything seems okay. |
