i think that's not quite accurate. those charts show at what point you can start seeing pixels, not image quality. go demo a 720p set of a good manufacturer next to a 1080p set. the 1080p set will be noticeably sharper.

i personally can tell and would never buy a 720p set.

That TV linked to above is only 1024x768 resolution. That sucks.

No, 720p does not suck at all. Indeed, when sitting at a normal viewing distance it is impossible to tell the difference between it and 1080p, especially on a 40 inch set.. This is not my personal experience, it is scientific fact.

View that article with Western viewing distances in mind, and 720p seems OK. Bigger rooms in bigger homes allow for the greater viewing distances where 1080p is negated. In Korea, we often sit far closer, on average, due to room size. As you can see from the chart, you can very easily tell the difference between 720p and 1080p at 7 feet. Most people in Korea, in our small apartments, will be viewing at between 5 to 9 feet. I can tell you that I can clearly notice the differences between the two at my couch distance, which is 8.

I also have owned both, and can tell you there is a difference (although your mind stops noticing it within a relatively short time after you've put yourself into the show).

I forgot to mention earlier that the newer LED displays are not necessarily as sharp as the 3 to 5 year-old LCD's. But the trade-off is that the newer LED's have a great deal more depth in the picture.... more of a 3D look without 3D glasses, I guess you could say.
