Sure you might get through but here is the official word from the Korean Embassy in the United States.
"Korean Immigration informed the Embassy on July 17, 2008, that they will no longer accept criminal records checks provided by an on-line service as some states and private companies are able to do. Korean Immigration will only accept an FBI criminal records check."

So there ya go. You can try and you maybe get in...but if it's rejected you know why. |
Oh wow...that sucks. Sigh...Korea, why do you have to be so difficult. |

You can use a channeler now to get an apostille-able CBC quickly, but make sure to first contact the channeler and make sure they can do it. Used to be that this webpage said that a channeler could not get a CBC for you with the proper paper and stamp required for getting it apostilled, but now they say that certain channelers can do this. I think the change is only since December or so.

The FBI offers two methods for requesting your Criminal History Summary or proof that one does not exist.
Option 1: Submit your request directly to the FBI.
Option 2: Submit to an FBI-approved Channeler, which is a private business that has contracted with the FBI to receive the fingerprint submission and relevant data, collect the associated fee(s), electronically forward the fingerprint submission with the necessary information to the FBI CJIS Division for a national Criminal History Summary check, and receive the electronic summary check result for dissemination to the individual. Contact each Channeler for processing times.
Note: If an authentication (apostille) is needed, please contact the Channeler to determine if this service is provided. |

I thought I would share that Korean immigration is indeed accepting FBI Background checks obtained through an approved channeler.
We used http://www.myfbireport.com to order my husband's background check...I'm not sure about other channelers, but the background checks they provide are authenticated (FBI logo, seal, and signature) and can be apostilled by the U.S. Department of State.
I was worried that it would be rejected, but the recruiter assured us that immigration now accepts these so we gave it a shot. She said that immigration in Seoul and Busan were accepting them (apparently they are the most strict) so the Daejeon immigration office would accept them no problem. She was correct.
Hope this helps.
FYI, I don't think this matters, but my husband changed his visa from F3 to E2. |

I'll have to try this when I get back from Hong Kong. Planning on going back to Korea this summer or fall. |

If you are applying to the EPIK program, you will have to get your FBI criminal background check through them and not a channeler. I have received my FBI CBC directly from the FBI and Accurate Biometrics (official channeler). I can tell you that the documents look similar but are not identical. Additionally, the tamper proof paper you receive from the FBI is different than the one you will receive from Accurate Biometrics.
Regardless, I am happy to say that I received my FBI CBC faster than expected, about a month. I am currently in the process of finding a legitimate service to get my documents apostille. Two companies I am looking at are US Legalization and Washington Consular Services. I read mix reviews on US Legalization and I haven't been able to find any reviews on WCS. Unfortunately, if you call them, they both don't seem all that professional and US legalization, even though they are the cheapest, seem kind of shady considering everything is done at a house rather than a business front. |

There are some unacceptable documents
1. In the past, FBI channelers couldn't put the FBI seal or signature of the section chief on the documents. These cannot be apostilled by the US Department of State.
2. Also, there are online-only background checks done by companies that just ask for you SSN, Name, Address, etc. and search for arrest records. These aren't based on fingerprints and aren't direct FBI checks. Also, they cannot be apostilled by the US Department of State.
HOWEVER
The FBI now lets channelers print documents with the FBI seal and signature of the section chief. These are direct FBI resutls. These can be apostilled by the US Department of State and should be accepted by Immigration.

In July of 2008, the FBI channelers couldn't use the FBI seal and signature. So this statement was accurate at the time, but shouldn't be now.
The only concern I would have is . . .
While the new authenticated channeler results should look identical to the new authenticated FBI results, it is possible that the channeler will print it on a different kind of security paper than the FBI uses. The FBI currently uses "DocuGard 04541" paper. It's possible that if immigration sees a different kind of paper, they will be suspicious of the document. |

I plan on using a creditable channeler to get fbi crc results.
The instructions say they send results only back to that one person.
So if im already here in Korea, and the request asks only for a U.S. address, how should request channeler to send to my korean address?
Do i, should i include a return envelop with my Korean address on it?
I'll use NBCI channeler. |

1 more ?
If they except my address and method of payment, will the US dept of State except same method of payment when i send results to them for apostille?
Should i also have to include an envelop (don't know what size) for my returning apostillized doc.? |

I would think the best payment method would be a US credit card. Next to that, you should be able to get an international money order. If you get the correct kind, it should be drawn on a US bank account. It should look like the examples on the US Embassy's page (except obviously made out to NBCI). http://seoul.usembassy.gov/acs_fees.html#sample

For this question, I recommend e-mailing or calling NBCI.

The US Department of State should accept the same payment types as the US Embassy. Of course the money order would need to be made out to "US Department of Sate" instead. http://seoul.usembassy.gov/acs_fees.html#sample
You would need to include a return envelope with your authentication request. The Department of State requires that you have completed all customs paperwork for the return shipment. If you create a FedEx account, you can print a return label and customs documentation. Then you can pick up an envelop at a FedEx location in Korea.
As a side note, if a relative is living at your US Address. It is easiest to have the background check results returned to them, then have them send them to the US Department of State (they would also need to include a return envelope, but could get this at a US Post office). Then they can mail the final documents to you.
As another side note, if you previously submitted an FBI background check to Immigration and have not left Korea for more than 3 months, you shouldn't need a new one (for immigration, although perhaps for the Ministry of Education if you are working at a public school). You can download the immigration guidebook here:

| Hi all, I am in the process of looking for a hogwan position now but one recruiter I've been talking to has me worried now after I sent her my CBC. She said for a fact she knows that immigration doesn't accept fbi approved channeler CBC and won't help with finding a position. I haven't had any other recruiters give me any trouble with it. I had no trouble with it being apostilled.I have read around they are being accepted but anyone have any updated info about these being accepted to ease my mind? |

I am 90% sure it is acceptable. As the FBI just considers channelers expediters, so you are (according to the FBI) getting the and official FBI report.
Both responces come back in the form of FBI letter 1-787. However, the channelers seem to be using a newer version of the form (the one that talks about not precluding further criminal history at the state or local level). The FBI is in the middle of a computer system upgrade. My guess is that the FBI will also use the newer version of letter 1-787 once they complete their computer upgrade. At that time, everyone's will look the same, so this won't be an issue anymore.
I am fairly certain your recruiter is wrong. I have seen other recruiters encouraging their recruits to use a channeler. So, just look for another recruiter.
That being said, I understand your recruiters perspective. They see a different looking document that says, "This does not preclude further criminal history at the state or local level" on it. If they send your info to a school and immigration doesn't accept it, it will cost them business. So, from their perspective, better safe than sorry. They are just playing it safe.
Like I said, just look for another recruiter. In the meantime, you can order your documents from the FBI too. That way you won't get anyone telling you "no" just so they can play it safe. |
