If I remember correctly ephedra has been banned by the FDA (US) due to side effects (including fatal ones.)
There were a number of pro football players who died after taking products containing ephdra. |
Most of the cases involving people dying from ephedrine were because they took several times the recommended dose ("if 24 mg three times a day works, why not 100 mg three times a day?"), were dehydrated, had a preexisting heart condition, etc.
I've taken ephedrine (the pharmaceutical grade extract of ephedra), and it does work at suppressing appetite and increasing thermogenesis. Unfortunately, it's illegal in Korea (I used it in Canada, where you can buy it at any health food store). You can get pseudoephedrine here as a prescription, though that will only suppress appetite (it's not a stimulant).
Ma huang in Korean medicine would be okay except you don't know what does you're getting of the stimulant component (the same problem existed with ephedra, which is why ephedrine is safer).
Ephedrine is not completely safe, but what is? If you use it responsibly you'll probably be okay. Plus, being overweight carries health risks too. |

Some company was trying to export Korean traditional medicine to the U.S.but they wouldn't let the medicine in because testing it found rat feces and steroids. I've heard from a doctor here that steroids is a common ingredient.
I think the benefit is all from the very restrictive diet that accompanies the medicine. Usually no alcohol, no pork or chicken, no fried foods, etc. |

I would totally buy hanyak if it had steroids in it. Maybe that's how the trainers at my gym got so big. |
