I've run into a lot of people pulling this kind of scam. Travellers who 'have been robbed' and need some money. I lived in Mexico for years and over a 5 year period I had the same white guy come up to me in Mexico City and tell me the same sob story a number of times. The first time I bought him lunch, after that I would just remind him that he had already gotten a lunch from me, he would then move on.

A one way ticket to Canada is easily had for less than 1000$, I find it impossible to believe that, in an emergency situation, she couldn't get together 1000$ from all her family and friends to get home. How did she end up with no money in her accounts etc? Was she carrying all her money with her in cash and it was all stolen? How could she have ended up here and then suddenly have nothing? If all my things were stolen while I was travelling I would have to get a new bank card etc, but I wouldn't be all of a sudden flat broke.

Consular officials would generally inform someone in her situation that she should consult the various airlines that service Canada and Korea and obtain policy information and price quotes pertaining to bereavement fares. Also, if her passport was stolen, then arrangements could be made to expedite her a new one.

I find it hard to fathom that all her friends and family members are so destitute that they can't collectively raise the necessary funds for her flight home. For someone who claims that she needs to get back to Canada ASAP, she certainly does not require $2500 to do so, unless she is gunning for an upgrade to business class.

What fate will become of poor, deceased dad ? Nobody in the family has a job ? No money for a funeral and burial ? The local Tim Horton's better put a lock on its dumpster.

I'm not sure whether this scammer should be commended or condemned for raising $29 bucks as of this posting.
