The problem is that beer only messes with your short term memory. Maybe some insignificant details of the long term get lost, but you still remember your distant past and bad memories. Unless, of course, you are drinking to forget what happened a few hours ago, or even what's happening right now, then I'm afraid all your getting is a euphoric buzz and a good time out of it.

A legitimate point indeed. No doubt many relationships, some of which lead to marriage, also have alcohol to thank, or blame.
