If not, which cities would you folk recommend?

You're 13th on the list of desirability so maybe you should be applying for jobs in Goyang

Korean cities by desirability for TEFLers (feel free to disagree)

1. Seoul
2. Busan
3. Jeju
4. Bundang
5. Ulsan
6 Yongin
7. Suwon
8 Daejeon
9 Daegu
10 Gwangju
11 Changwon
12 Seongnam
13 Goyang
14 Bucheon
15 Ansan

I live in Goyang, but work in Seoul. Not much there. Maybe a dozen hagwons and a dozen elementary school positions with people who aren't leaving. There's two adult academies as well. Low-key though.

That list is highly flawed. Daegu above Bucheon/Seongnam? Seriously?

Seongnam should be right up there on par with Bundang, given that it's nearly the same location. Bucheon should be on par with Suwon.

I agree, I just compiled it using a mixture of Cohiba's rule (the nearer to Seoul the better) plus Jeju and Busan added on and then the other cities in descending order of size. The nearer to Seoul bit was just made up of the cities I know near Seoul so yeah, a rush job. Just wrote it to spark a debate really. What would your list be?

But not a peep. Nobody is even replying to my emails.

The part in bold could be part of the problem. But are you female? (Most certified elementary teachers are.) If so, I think if you hold out and are patient, you will be able to get something eventually.

From most preferred to least preferred:

Female from the United States
Female from Canada
Female from England
Female from Australia
Female from New Zealand
Female from Ireland
Female from South Africa
Male from the United States
Male from Canada
Male from England
Male from Australia
Male from New Zealand

Idiot!
Or sage?
Or oracle?
Would you kindly PM me next Saturday's Lotto numbers? Cheers;)

ibeattheborg, notice how people are not disputing my list as much as edwardcatflap's. What I wrote is true, whether you want to believe it or not. (I'm guessing you fall somewhere towards the bottom of the list. Tough break, man. Life's not fair.)

BTW, if you are wondering how I came up with what I did- I know Koreans who hire Westerners.

Hi folks,

Long story short, I'm looking to head back to Seoul asap. Have emailed a ton of agencies in response to their ads on eslcafe.com

1. I'm a certified elementary teacher
2. I have 2 years experience in Korea (came back home a few months ago)
3. I have 2 great references from my time in Korea and references from Ireland too.

But not a peep. Nobody is even replying to my emails. I find it very strange. I have applied for a variety of locations and only replied to actual job advertisements. None of my emails were speculative.

The thing is, the recruiters have posted the same ads a few times and I'm emailing them a second time saying, "I told you I wanted to apply for the job in Mapo Gu/whatever Gu" and yet they're not even responding.

Why are they posting jobs several times but not even acknowledging my emails? Is it a ploy to get people's details in order to offer them positons outside of Seoul and the other popular areas?

Or has the job market just dried up completely?

I'm confused to be honest.

Kindergarten ads are all over the place. Are you looking for mainly kindy or elementary/middle? It seems like the Elementary jobs have really dried up lately. Have a few friends looking and can't get anything.

Do many TEFLers want to go to Jeju? I've only been there once for a short trip (and didn't meet any TEFLers there), but I'd imagine it'd be a bit Truman Show-ish, wouldn't it?

Actually, the top three are the only places in Korea I've ever heard TEFLers talking about wanting to go to. Unless they have a particular reason, like a partner, for going elsewhere. People do say good things about the other cities, , like Bundang, but only after they end up there.

Bingo.

Someone gets it. The hiring system here really is pretty simple.

What? You know Koreans who hire Westerners? All of them?

Where I come on your list is not relevant. It is not my experience.

That is why you are an idiot. Do you accept my experience?

Personal experience and perception of reality are one in the same really. That being said, I think both of you are right.

OP - ignore world traveler - he is an irresponsible debbie downer. Someone who thinks the world is coming to and end. Rolling Eyes

Fact of the matter is I know tons of Brits and Irish working in Seoul.

You WILL get a job. Just don't take no BS from recruiters. Remember you are the prize.

Good luck. Worst comes to worst you can take a job in Gyeonggi. Cool

Cheers creeper.

Thing is, I've enquired about jobs in Gyeonngi too. I'm not TOO fussy about where I end up. But even if I say to recruiters that I'm open to working in several locations, I'm not getting any offers.

I'll just keep on trying.

OP - ignore creeper1. He has this weird notion that by continuously bigging up TEFL in Korea, fewer people will head over to China to compete for his job.

I suspect the truth is somehwere between the two
