I doubt she had health insurance since the bill was $13,900.

In December, the doctors thought I had either TB or pneumonia (it was pneumonia) and I had three chest x-rays, three sputum tests, and a CT scan. My total costs were less than $500 since I have health insurance. Even when I was hospitalized for three days for an appendectomy last year, national health insurance covered 100% of the stay in the general ward.

Make sure you have health insurance, folks.

I had an appendectomy a few years ago. I paid the extra for the private room, but that was only an extra 100k or so a day for 5 days. My bill was over 2 million won with national insurance, with no meals. Get extra private insurance. I did.

It could have been the fact that she was in some sort of ICU area where there is much more intensive/expensive care, as she was so ill?

My wife was in hospital 2 weeks ago. I was pretty shocked how little the nurses or doctors did for the patients. If my sister in law and me weren't there she would have been on her own. (Not saying this is the norm, it was my first real experience with the Korean health system)

It's so sad to think of someone being totally alone as they are dying. I hope someone was with her.

It more or less is the norm, isn't it? When my wife was pregnant and in the maternity ward, all the women there were attended by their families. I was under the impression that if possible Koreans would rather attend to their family members themselves. Whether that's a matter of sentimentality or a concern for the extra costs involved in more attention from nurses, I don't know.

Wow, where did you get yours done? Mine was around 485,000 won which included meals, medicine, three days in the general ward, etc. The ultrasound that identified the appendicitis was an additional 95,000 won or so. I had mine done at Joyfull Hospital in Gangnam.

My experience was different than a lot of people's. The nurses were very attentive. My surgeon came by except for the day she was off and a different doctor checked on me. The doctor that's the owner came by too. The doctors and nurses were all so nice. Plus, the other patients and their families in the general ward were so kind and were a total blast to hang out with. After I finally passed gas and the nurses allowed me to eat, the food was so awesome. And I got to watch the NBA Finals, movies, etc. I had a total blast, under the circumstances. Great times with great people at a great hospital in a great health care system in a great country on a great planet.

Reverse Pneumonia in 3 Hours

NaturalHealth365.com presents Dr. Andrew Saul, an internationally-recognized expert in nutritional therapies and Jonathan Landsman talking about a simple, yet powerful way to cure pneumonia in 3 hours - naturally.

Dr. Saul reveals (2) incredible stories of recovery - from serious health problems - without the use of toxic medications or risky surgical procedures. One story is about how to reverse viral pneumonia and the other illustrates the healing power of nutritional supplements for babies. After listening to this video - you'll never look at the seasonal flu shot the same - again.

Sorry but this is starting to sound crazy. Let's hope we don't have too much of this stuff on the forum here.

I donated some money to the Migrant Worker House in Seongnam and I was shown a room full of jars of migrant laborers who died in Korea, were cremated and did not have the money to repatriate their remains. I was told this is a major problem in Korea.

There are probably thousands of people/families who need assistance getting their remains home from Korea.

Really?
Hospitals are in the money making business. Period.

We come into this world alone (well, arguably not for twins/triplets/etc.) and we leave it alone.

I guess it would be nice having teary-eyed family members surrounding me when I punch my ticket, but either way no one gets out of this world alive.

As is noted on one of my favorite sites, zerohedge.com , "On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero."

I would argue that when you are born you are as close to your mother as you can possibly be.

When I travelled in India I got really sick, the sickest I have ever been. I was travelling alone and was shivering and sweating and passing in and out of consciousness, alone in the room I was staying. I was pretty out of it.
The French couple next door were worried as they hadn't seen me for a few days and got the manager to open my door. They took me to the hospital and either the dude or his wife sat with me for the next few days. I remember waking up for a few moments and the women was holding my hand. In my fever addled state, that feeling of someone caring enough to be with me filled me with indescribable comfort.

You are right we do die alone, but I hope she had a friend or a co-worker or even a stranger to be with her.

^ I understand that was a powerful experience for you. It would have been for myself, as well.

Maybe it comes down to personality and the people/family in your life. For me, I'd probably (in the event that my death was an event for others) say "Thanks, but can everybody please leave so I can die in peace?"

This is assuming the Hollywood-style slowly drifting away type of death as opposed to getting shot by an errant bullet from a NYC cop or being run over by a taxi or something.

Unfortunately, curing your gullibility will likely take longer than 3 hours.

Back on topic. Hopefully Andrea Godina's tragic story will serve as a catalyst, and remind others about the importance of obtaining supplementary medical insurance. While it is clearly evident that additional medical coverage would not have saved Andrea's life, at least it would have mitigated the financial burden on her family, and bring about an expedited repatriation.

I asked around, and it seems to be the average price. I went to the best hospital in my city. I have no visible scar, though. They went in through my navel. Did you have that type of surgery? My mom had an appendectomy a few years before I did and she had a few small scars. I didn't do an ultrasound, but a CT scan, which is more costly.

Also, hospital food is never good, and watching tv and movies does not make it a blast, under any circumstance.

There are some problems with Korea. In Europe medicine is largely socialized and available to everyone. In the US every hospital must provide adequate treatment (even private hospitals) if a person is in danger of dying, being permanently maimed, in serious pain etc.. I don't know does Korea have anything like that? I'm surprised that a country as advanced as Korea would be that fickle about something like this. After all it needs teachers here to teach English. So some of the teachers are going to get very sick and possibly die while doing their jobs. This is very very fickle for a country this advanced. This should be taken up at the State Department level. In essence well we can be fickle too, if you want to play that way.

Excuse me Braniac, the above mentioned hospital here in Korea surely, unquestionably, without a doubt, absolutely, really, truly, did in fact provide treatment, and did not refuse treatment.

I had major surgery and a 21 day stay in a Korean hospital prior to paying anything and prior to showing proof of insurance.

Your assertion regarding USA hospitals is crazy.

You appear to be crazy.
